Title: OP Light Cruiser peculiarity, with new patch
Post by: Noseybonk on July 18, 2003, 08:28:02 pm
In honour of the new OP patch I reinstalled the game, applied the patch, and embarked on a new pirate campaign. I was assigned a W-CR3, which is supposed to be armed with amongst other things, 2x plasma-D. However when I selected these individually the info box showed them both as AMD, although they are shown pictorially on the ship schematic as plasma. So obviously, my 'plasma' couldn't be fired. Is this sort of thing fixed by downloading Firesoul's shiplist, or is something else required?

Plasma D in SFC is a defensive weapon with no offensive capabilities, LIke an AMD it will auto fire at drones and fighters.

Nope, all plasD acts the same way.

As I understand it, in SFB, plasD has both off and defensive, but in SFC there is no Offensive plasD (officially. if you mod games, droD fires offensive plasD). So plasD is just an exclusive PD weapon.

Both plasD (def) and AMD were added in a patch (activated is more like it) and there apparently is only one Artwork (panel) for both.

3dot14,
Have I been missing something all along here? If I put DroD in a weapons slot do I get offensive PlaD?

Yes, a little known easter egg... (along with the simplified version of TRB)
It behaves Exactly like a missile rack, except it fires plasD.

I am surprised that it's not brought up more often...

It doesn't work well.
The DroD are affected by Era and speeds.. and the different kinds fire different plasmas.

Early: speed 16, normal damage.
Mid: speed 24, ignores shields, normal damage
Late: speed 32?, 2x damage, envelloping.  (20 points split by 6 shields)

Unless it got fixed in 25410 and no one was advised, not even the testers?

Yikes, he is right, the part that counts.

They are all speed 36, plasma speed. (I try loading S M F in different eras), but the damage behaviour is as Firesoul describes. Medium Speed DroD REALLY ignores shield...And Type IV (missile selection) really doubles the damage yield. it can be scatterpacked. (like I said, Exactly as a missile)

So it would seem it doesn't change everything, and is only good in Scripted Skirmishs.
