Hi, I'm working on the Scorpion fighter seen in Nemesis and I want to share it to you so you can tell me what you think.
It still need a lot of work and it is not very accurate as you can see but I'm still working on it.
It is my first model (I've only made kitbashes before) so don't laugh.
Finally, I'd be very grateful if someone have detailed pictures of this ship and can send them to me.
This is the only picture I could find.
Thanks in advance,
Mariano

You've got the basic shape pretty good. The "flow and feel" are dead on, I think. Keep going and refine some of the lines and details. So far though it's looking good, IMO.
-
Hey MarianoDT!
I can't post pictures, but I can point you in the right direction for some more shots:
http://www.trekpulse.com/movies/nemesis/screencaps/collection13.html
The shots appear dark on my monitor but you may have better luck. Not the greatest pics, but they should give you some more angles.
From what I've seen so far, she looks very accurate already!
-
I give you the thumbs up!
I think what you've got here clearly shows that you have the ability to succeed. When it get's tough, take a short break, think about the shapes, and check the pics again. You can do this!

Hi people, a little update.
I haven´t had enough time to finish it, but I´ve changed a few things.
Here you have:
Hope you like it.
Thanks,
Mariano

Looking better and better. We need more folks doing the *little* ships like this for us. Gonna be real nice when it's finished.

Wow Mariano! When I saw the first render I thought it was impressive, but the update that you posted is just fantastic! You are going to make very big waves in the modelling arena around here once you start to texture your babies! Well done! I wish you continued success!

Hi Smiley, thanks you very much for you comments.
I was planning to start texturing so I don´t get mad modeling all the time. Now I´m doing some research on Texturing so as to learn a little and start with it. I hope to have some news in a few days.
Also, I think knowing about what textures can and can not do for a model will help me with my moddeling.
Thanks again,
Mariano

One other piece of advice, before you get too much further into it... remember to keep the poly count down. It's looking sweet, But it's also looking very high-poly for a game model. Remember that you want to keep the triangle count as low as possible. Most modellers seem to aim for around 2000-3000 polys, but I prefer to aim for the 1000-2000 or less range. SFC seems to do better that way, even on higher end cards. Taldren's 'official' guideline is around 1600 I think, according to the shipbuilding manual thing. But they more often had finished models in the 600-900 poly range. Now, you can push that up a bit, due to better hardware being the norm these days, but I wouldn't go too far with it.

Hi Mainwaring, Thanks for the advice.
I´m trying the Multires modifier to reduce the poly count and I wil let the textures do most of the detail. As it is now is like 5000 polys, and with the Multires I found that I can reduce up to 50% of the polys without loosing much smoothnes.
What I´m still looking for is a way to choose the polygons myself an merge them or convert a group of polys into one.
Does anyone know how to do that? Please?
Thanks in advance,
Mariano

I actually use Lightwave for most of my modelling, and just use Max to convert, these days, so I'm not as up on it in Max as I should be. I will say, though, that regarding those poly reduction utilities... some of them do an awesome job, but there really is no substitute for modelling low-poly from the start. Obviously, it's a bit late now, but it's something to keep in mind for later projects.
If you can't get the poly count down any other way, send me a PM and we can arrange to run it through one of my utilities. Last night I took a 6100 polygon model I had laying around for CG cutscenes and knocked it down to 2000 with no significant detail loss. I was pretty impressed-- the reduction glitches were very minimal.

This model has 1100 polys, It has lost some of the detail, but it is OK for a ship that little...
I can lower the polys a little more I you want to use it as a shuttle, or I can raise them if you want a bigger ship.
Thanks,
Mariano

Good, it would be better with some more detailed textures though
-
I´ve done this textures with paint, so they are temporary untill y get a more robust image editor......
Besides, the original fighter is almost everything black. I´ll try with other look and colors....

This is a really cool, ship and I want it...not to mention the fact that its something CANON and *new* to add....

Bumpin' in anticipation!
-
I snuck out of the SFC3 scene for a while, but I'm sneaking back in....
Glad to see that this model is doing so well. Also glad to see you got the poly-count down-- she's looking good, and i bet she's pretty easy on the GPU now, too.
-
I´ve just uploaded the file into SFU Repository.
This is the link:
http://www.strategyplanet.com/sfc/files.shtml
Today you must perform a search with the word "ScorpionFig" because it doesn´t show up in the new files section yet.
Is´s been scaled to use as a Shuttle. But if you want something different email me....
It also includes a _brk model altough it is not necessary as a shuttle. (In case you want to use it as a Fighter)
It has one primary HP and one heavy HP.
I´ve also improved the textuers a bit.
Thanks,
Mariano
-
HA!
Had me going there... Looked great till I say it was only for SFC3. Good for them. Bad for me.
-
Hi,
I´m not sure about the conversion methods for SFC1/2, but I can send you the .mod file just after converting it in max (I mean without glows and the recatcher).
Or if you need anything else just tell me....
Thanks,
Mariano

I really get a kick out of how people freak out about ship compatability.

Try a little experimenting: it only took me a week to figure out how to convert ships to and from SFC3 <--> SFC: OP, 2, 1 and another week to convert Bridge Commander games to SFC3. Its incredibly easy!
Anyway, this ship rocks!!
Love it thanks!
