Imaybe its your sound card, if its' freezing when your firing, might be having problems playing the sounds out properely. Or, might be some of the advanced features on the graphics card, (AA and FSAA etc). I know this screws some of my older games like MOO2. If its an ATI card, sometimes environment bump mapping causes issues but can't see that being a problems with SFC.
Found this here:
http://www.taldren.com/software/SFC1/downloads.html
Known Issues
1. Depending on internet lag, shield status may not be properly reflected in combat. You may see your opponent do something requiring his shields to be lowered without the shield graphic changing. This happens with t-bombs and hit & run raids. The shield is actually lowering, so if you fire -- you will still probably hit through a lowered shield.
2. SoundBlaster Live: Try lowering the hardware acceleration slider by one or two notches if you are having stability problems.
3. Freezing at the end of a multiplayer session: If a player is disconnected from a multiplayer game, there is a chance that the host will suffer a one minute pause at the end of the session. This is DirectPlay-related and will be fixed in DirectX 8.
But i presume you've seen that. Apparently thers also a 1.03 patch for SFC:
http://www.strategyplanet.com/sfc/patches_sfc1.shtml
But I assume you got that one too. It does mention you have to patch to 1.03 from a clean install
Probably been of no help

I'm having the same problem. Does anyone know if playing it in "classic" mode from XP would work? And by clean install, you mean without any other patches? I did that...now to get the patch and see...thanx for that link, btw.

I have an ATI Radeon 7200 and it plays EAW, OP and 3 flawlessly. But I too have the problem with SFC1 with the weapons fire. The display becomes jerky at the moment of weapons fire but is otherwise quite good. I have 40-50 fps most of the time and 30-40fps during weapons fire.

There's no hope or cure for this other than switching your comp to a lower OS like Win 98 or ME.
-
Is it only when you fire? Look for your sound acceleration.
If it occurs fairly regularly and not just when an audio file kicks in then I'd suspect a Windows update or your newer OS like Atrahasis said.
When I upgraded to the Windows 2000 Service pack 2 a year or so ago when it came out my SFC2 and OP both "hitched" every 3 or so seconds. After deinstalling the pack and going back to 1 the problem was gone. After experimenting with both pc's it was obviously something between service pack2 and the crappy motherboard I had at the time having an attitude with the game.

SFC 1 does not work well with the newer OS's like 2000 and probably XP......it runs fine with ME though. I know this because I could play it fine when I had ME but after I switched to 2000 (with no hardware switches) the game ran like crap.

How did I miss this.....
Before you go nuts?
-
i wonder if its the same problem as in SFC2 that i had
sfc.ini
-->
[Mouse]
async=0
hwblit=0
try that

heve you atempt to set the compitabilaty of the program to win 98 \ me ?
-
I have the SFC 1 demo running fine under XP.. what I'll do is either email you the .PIF for it, or post a graphic of the settings.. but it might also just be because it's the demo, not the full game.
(I install the demos for testing ships ingame, quicker and easier for test purposes to load the demo than the full version).
I'll dig out my SFC 1 full game disc and try installing it with the same .PIF for it and see how that works..
(Yes, I know it's XP and that they're no longer called '.PIF' because 'PIF' doesn't sound as uber-sexy as "Shortcut", but a Shortcut is a .PIF by any other name..
-
Ooooh, and there was I thinking that a PIF was a Program Information File (shortcut + settings) for a MS-DOS program

LNK are shortcuts for Windows programs
