Title: SFC2 - F-CFS......
Post by: quircus on February 20, 2003, 12:38:10 pm
In SFC2, is the F-FCS (and F-FCS+) (Fire support cruiser) MEANT to only have port-facing photon arcs, or is it a mistake by the creators?

Yes they are supposed to be like that.

Heh, I love takin' that ship.  People see it and think it'll be a pushover, but in the right hands it's very deadly.

Is it meant to be away from the battle, and facing so that it can fire at the enemies that are on the port side??

If so, why are the port shields not very strong? Surely, that side would take the most damage?

I loved that ship in SFC1 when all the photons fired backwards.

It does just as the name implies, offers fire support. It is not meant to be in the front of a battle. It is meant to circle around giving fire support from a distance. It still has 4 tubes facing forward, so it really isn't any different from a line cruiser in that respect. In fact, when you turn off the rear firing tubes, it's one hell of a line cruiser.

I could be wrong, but I thought that the Federation made 2 versions, one with all left, and one with all right, and that they were supposed to be used in a fleet formation, sort of a multi-ship dreadnought.  Also useful for planetary and base assaults

I always wished we had a right side version as well as a command variant with 4 tubes RS and 4 tubes LS.

I don't think you'll ever find any photons with any arcs better than 120 degrees, unless you put them there yourself.  Supposed to be a limitation of the weapon.

The CFS(+) in SFC1 had a 180 degree arc on one set of tubes. They understandably changed that because it was rather ridiculous have all 8 fire backwards. The command variant I would like would be able to do this, however, as well as directly forward, but only 4 to each side.

I believe the CFS is a Taldren creation. There isn't anything in my SFB books like it.

I was under that impression (that Taldren/14E made it) as well.

I have to say, among the Taldren creations (CFS, SPZ (tho SFB has one, I was told its nothing like the SFC1 SPZ) and EGO) I enjoy the Fire support the most.

been a long time, but I thought I remembered one of the SFB SSD's having a battery of 360 ' photons on either Fed CC or DN hulls.

The CFS I remember from SFB had it's photons aimed to the side. The purpose given was to "circle the battle or planet" and fire the photons in. Similar to the AC-130 gunship concept.

According to the SFB Master Annex File, Basic, Advanced and all Add-on Modules there was never a CFS. Maybe it appeared in one of the Captians Logs or Nexus, but I believe it was a Taldren creation.

Very nice ship though, especially if supporting coop.

Simply stated, it is a bombardment ship.  It can stand off at distance, circling its target counterclockwise, lobbing endless barrages of proximity torpedoes, or if the captain is daring, attempt to close to overload range and do the same.

In fleet actions this ship can get into trouble if enemy ships can maneuver to stay away from the port side.

This ship is particularly useful against stationary targets; not so useful against targets that are fast and maneuverable.  You would want an escort(s) in fleet actions.

Hmmm, funny name for a bombardment ship - Fire Support Cruiser. I've heard this one before. I don't know where it got started, but it's BS.

Great link Nanner. Even found the SSD for the CFS here:

http://www.mninter.net/~phdship/fedcfs.gif

Plus the full description of the ship here about half way down the page:

http://www.mninter.net/~phdship/02fedships.htm

"Plans for this ship were found in the Battle Simulation Data Banks of Star Fleet Command. The design was apparently intended to provide fleets with a fire support platform. From the plans it would appear this ship was intended to circle the battle and provide long range fire support. There are no reports which would point to the fact that this ship ever left the battle simulators. One reason may have been the poor arcs coupled with the equally poor turning radius of the CA. There are, however, some indications a two fire support platforms may have been produced. "

Hmmm. Interesting that theirs has G-Racks while Taldren's has B-Racks.

i think the EGO is on there too.. i know a couple more fed ships are on there (i think).

its a cool site. some designs are WAY ott.. others are okay though. you need to pick and choose. i converted the fed designs (some of the more moderate ones) a while back. if anyone wants them, i can always post it.

B-racks make more sense. G-racks are for defense and keeping enough of a drone threat to occupy your opponent. This ship is supposed to stay outside the main battle and lend support and BOMBARD. The extra drones  make sense. IMO
