I am using Win XP, which comes with DirectX 8.1 already in it. But my graphics card says it supports DirectX 9 completely. Does anyone here recommend downloading DirectX 9 from Microsoft and installing it? I vaguely recall some time ago on our boards that one of the SFC series did not run under DirectX 9. Has that been fixed?
Has anyone had any experiences with it, good or bad?

Install the latest DirectX. It is backwardly compatible and "better".
There was a problem (fixed in the beta patch) with SFC:TNG recognising DirectX 9.
-
Thank you! Okay then, DirectX 9 it is! (Sticks bare foot in water, "Is it cold??")

DirectX 9b is latest.
DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime

Thanks, Talonclaw.
To everyone who might be interested: get the DirectX 9 SFC3 fix file! I forgot and was unpleasantly surprised for a few tens of minutes. It's available at SFU, Taldren, and other similar haunts.

Umm, do not use the Direct X 9 file fix is you intend to use the v500 beta patch. Using both on your game will cause unwanted game operation and game file corruption.
-
Oh!
I've already applied the DirectX 9 file fix. Is it "uninstallable"? Or, would you recommend a total uninstall of SFC3 and then reinstall followed by application of the beta patch?

Reinstall..
use Add/Remove Programs and remove SFC 3
delete the SFC 3 game folder
Reinstall SFC 3 only, say no to GSA and say no to Direct X 8.1
use SFC 3 Patch 1.01 Beta 2 build v500 to patch.
go into your SFC 3 game directory and find the SFC3.exe, right click and select properties, click on compatibility tab and make sure there is a check in Disable Visual Themes, click OK.
then choose how you want to play.. if you care for a mod, your ready for it, if vanilla, your ready for it.

Be warned, installing the Beta patch may result in all of the following happening to you:
1. Inability to play on Activision B and C servers. <sarcastically>And that would be a crying shame.
2. Ability to play the Borg mini-campaign, even if you didn't buy the game at Best Buy. It may only last for four missions, but it is fun!
3. Compatibility with a number of very good mods, including Generations at War, Dominion Wars, and Unity II.
Use it at your own risk, but please use it. The results are worth it!

Beside all that it plain won't work...
