I want to turn my computer into a server to host some stuff I've compiled over the years. How would I go about doing such? Do I have to download any particular software? Would I need to buy a .com? Someone please give me some information on this. Would be much appreciated.

Web server software:
http://www.apache.org
or
http://www.aprelium.com (faster and easier to use but less flexible and powerful)
For a domain name from a dynamic IP address try:
http://www.dydns.com
or
http://www.dns2go.com (my choice)
Other choices for both are available but the above are good picks if you ask me.
If you get deeper into it:
http://www.MySQL.com
and
http://www.PHP.net
If you get that far you'll likely find Perl and Java stuff on your own if desired.
Be aware that most ISPs explicitly forbid running servers of any kind, so you may have to be a bit sneaky about it, though I'll never understand why they'll allow Kazaa but not Apache... Kazaa does way more damage to their booking ratios I can guarantee it...

Thank you both for your help.
