Title: Stopping shield removal

Okay, not knowing much about programming/modding, I thought I would throw this idea at someone who is.

A few people on Dynaverse remove all shielding in order to decrease the mass, and increase the speed of thier ships (100+ in some cases).
Now you cant save your ship config without having all your hull, bridge and power sections occupied.  

Can't the same be done for the shield sections?

Forgive me for being dense, I haven't played SFC3, but wouldn't the fact that he is unshielded give you a huge advatage?

not to mention he is travelling so fast that the LAG cant keep up.

in essence this tactic of going so fast and skipping all over, is like unto the PICARD MANEUVER. go read about it in the ecyclopedia. picard did a short move at warp speed and fired point blank. supposedly the sensors on the enemy ship hadnt realised he moved that because the "light" hadn't reached them.

ha, only in sfc3 could you pull a trick like this.  I never did like the speed based on mass thing, really kind of skews things.  I was wondering when someone would figure out you could just dump most stuff and fly at speed 100.  then a standard ship with a standard load out kind of sits there going "hmmm.... what to do".  

I would imagine that your super speed opponent has an advantage if he chooses a race that has fast recharging weapons that go long range.  

In SFC2, having no shields was like suicide.  People who forgot to hit the red alert button to raise shields were dead in a few seconds.  No one tries to fight without shields, cuz you coudln't go faster than your opponent and charge suitable weaponry at the same time, the only option is to retreat.  

Your best bet is to forgo using heavy weapons that don't have range.  Just stick to your longest range weapon, crank the speed, and go.  Overload your phasers or disruptors and keep plinking away, keeping in mind that in a clash, you have advantage.  Make sure your heavies are saved for when they're coming in on you, and then lay it thick, H&R his warp core and stuff, just target his hull and rip it to shreds, and keep closing.  Having no shields may mean hyper speed, but it also means that they have to play a mean game of keep away.

Ummm, Excuse ME for being dense, but removing your shields by anyother means other than pressing green alert is CHEATING.  And anyone who does that on Dynaverse are very dishounerbale and should be thrown out of the nearest airlock.

Ummm, Excuse ME for being dense, but removing your shields by anyother means other than pressing green alert is CHEATING.  And anyone who does that on Dynaverse are very dishounerbale and should be thrown out of the nearest airlock.
 




Hence the conundrum.  Not that matters are much better if someone in a large dreadnaught, like a Negh'Var, decides to drop the shields to all Class-I's for a similar, if not as drastic, mass-drop/speed boost.  In such a case, one does have shields still, even if they are made of gauze.

The problem lies either in the speed calculations based on Impulse, Thruster, and mass ratings (most likely suspect) or that ships which carry shields should have a minimum shiedling requirement (lame, but likely easier to implement).

No the problem is people cheating by modifying the config files.  There is no other way to describe it.  By all means mod away for single player, its fun taking on a starbase with five dreadnaughts with only a saber on infinite hull or whatever, but when you play online, or wheneva you play on mulitplayer, you should not CHEAT.  Doesn't matter how the programming is caculated or whatever, DONT DO IT, ITS DIGUSTING AND ITS CHEATING!

Sorry but no modifying is needed to do this. All you have to do is, to go into refit and click on remove... shields gone.

So it can't be cheating, since everyone can do this, on an un-modified verson of the game.
