It may not be a SFC related problem.
If you don't know how... go to: START>RUN
Type in "dxdiag" and press OK
Click over to the 'Display' tab and check the 'direct draw' and 'direct 3d'.
Have you changed video cards lately?
I recently went from a GeForce2 to a 9600XT card and found out thru trial and error that I needed to delete the old GeForce drivers or they would interfere with the video processing.
Hope this helps.

With regards to the game, I don't remember your name, but that means nothing. I am pretty sure I was before your time. I was an SFC addict from it's demo days until it's demise when Mplayer went down. I played for a very short while on GSA afterwards, but it wasn't the same without the leauge, and all the people...

I have tested all my drivers for compatability with DX. They all pass. Perhaps it is my video card. I did get a new one. But even before I got the new card, I could never get SFC 2 to work on XP. My video card now is the Radeon 9600 SE. One time I did try going back to Dx 8.0, and then the game worked, but then none of my newer games worked. So I just assumed that since it was an older game, it just wasn't designed for XP.

Well, it is not an XP incompatibility problem. Many of us are using XP (reluctantly

Then OP would crash upon startup at first, but bypassing the movie by launching off of StarFleetOP did the trick. Everything is working so far.

I do believe I will need to be trained agian. I played a quick battle and the AI beat me. So .. yea.. That pretty much says where I'm at skill wise. This old dog needs to learn some new tricks. When given a BPV, and a race, I used to know right off what ship to expect to fight, and what ship to take to best counter. I don't remember any of that stuff.
Also I need to read up on weapons. Damage, speeds, ranges.... All the stuff I have forgotten. I'm hoping once I start playing again, it will all come back to me.

I remember well the SFC 1 demo days, pre-launch. I was some rather hot stuff, if I may say so myself.
Ah, just Federation and Klingons. A few smatterings of ships. The occasional hacked freighter with the armaments of a starbase. Wild battle royals. Playing hide and sneak with that dreadnought. Heh. One could get really pumped up sitting in the room with a green ready button waiting to launch. I remembered the devs would occasionally drop in, talk about the game, maybe play a few rounds. I also remember when the game released, and we all huddled in the lounge waiting for the Fed-Ex truck to arrive. Great crowd to play with. Had some good friends that I talked to on the beeper.
It was a few months before I got my SFC1 copy. Played for awhile, dropped it for awhile, came back and found MPlayer was gone, to my sorrow. I had some great times there.
Man, this was long ago, back in the age of antiquity. I don't even remember the alias I used back then, only that I had a spiffy avatar.
Well, enough wandering reminiscences for now.

Doing great! Havn't been active in SFC for a few months, but a book I'm writing is getting wrapped up and I'll be flying again soon.
Got involved with the Meta...er, Dyna beta while in KWP that pretty much took me out of the fleet back then and ended up flying ISC after EAW hit. I still fly Klink every now and then.
Yeah, I still miss them SFC1 days with Maelstrom and Lonewolf. That was quite a fleet we had.The evolution that SFC has undergone thanks to Dave, Mags, Firesoul, Pest, etc etc, still amazes me. A hell'of a community we have here. You'll find SFC quite different and much improved.
Glad you're back! Hope to cya on the battlefield!
