ok this is verry simple because i'm not that advanced in making max renders
i tryed it after i have all my max versions installed, this render was made in max 4.2 and shows the Loki class passing by a dieying star
-
and one more, showing a scout group infront of the same dieying star

-
Very nice indeed

Im just starting to get used to Max's capabilities myself, amazing software no doubt abut it.
-
Very beautiful! The mood of that star is great contrast for a new, gleaming starship.
-
very good, did you also made a break model for them?
-
Really nice render, Terradyhne!!

Did you make the star yourself? I usually get my backgrounds from nasa,,,the images you can get there are great. The wallpaper I made of your Saba, Wolfsglens Akula and my Ent.C is made with a pic from there. Great stuff.
-
Where can I D/L the Saba and Akula classes ?
-
-
and one more pic of the scout group

-
Now the composition of this one is cool!
I can imagine some kid on some far flung planetoid looking up in some warp powered telescope, snapping to attention and saluting as the squadron passed by his system!
Or, some aliens shaking in their boots looking at their scanners.

when will all 3 be downloadable?

pretty cool dude. if i could make a suggestion you might want to try 3 point lighting.
now my method on how to do it, all ur going to do is use 3 spotlights and set them in triangle around the object (doesn't have to be perfect), one light will be the key light (has the shadows, i use raytrace, and is the brightest, multiplier 1. it will be the sun for ex) another will be a fill light (no shadows, second brightest, multiplier .3. keeps the shadows from overpowering the model) and the 3rd light will be the backlight (multiplier .2 no shadows, helps seperate the model from the backgound) thats the best way i can describe it though if you know how to video post i would suggest use cameras, they will make life easier.
here are to links i've found that may explain this better than i can
http://www.3drender.com/light/3point.html
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/Jenns3pt_tut/3ptlighting.asp
all it takes is a little time and experimenting but good lighting will definatly make any render look better (see the soul wolf thread, the renders on the 4th page all use 3 point lighting). though i would suggest not use backgrounds until you got a good hang of the lighting aspect. hope this helps you on ur way.
best of luck learning max
