instead of shared connection networking can you have two pc's two USB DSL modems into two phone sockets, say in two seperate rooms

Damm good question, although thinking about it, if they are on the same line I highly doubt it. Also each modem/computer would want to connect and log in to the ISP, and I am 99.99% positive that it can not be done if using one line. Two lines, maybe?
It would work if both modems were not on at the same time though.

The best thing to do would be to set up a network, wired or wireless and run it through a router. This would allow both computers to access the net at the same time and would probably cost about the same or less than having a second DSL modem.

Yes it's possible, however, each DSL line must be connected to it's own phone separate number.
