OK, normally I don't participate in anything but the off topic boards, so I am posting an actual Taldren game comment here instead! Forgive me if this is not eKosher...
I just re-installed SFC 3 and have been playing the single player missions and I decided that I just hate the cloaking device. But not for any of the reasons you might suspect.
I hate it because it slows the game down. "Whiirrrrrrrr" ship decloaks. You can't target it. Now, basically, you just have to sit there waiting for it to decloak before you can continue on with the battle.
Sure, it's a useful way to take yourself out of combat and get ready for a nice alpha strike, but really, that is not worth dragging a battle on and on and on because your opponent is cloaked half the time.
As a tactical device, the cloak is neat. As a game mechanic it makes the game less fun!

Yes you CAN target a decloaking (and cloaking) ship...its the most vulnerable time for the ship, where you can get in shots that normally the shields would stop.

I do target the ship during the cloak-up and cloak-down periods. But even so, I was in a long and protracted nebula battle last night against a virtually identical ship and it was getting really boring. I knew I'd eventually wear it down but it took a while.
Thanks for the advice on the officer; I did not even know that this was the case. I'll keep on the lookout for the right one!
