I have to ask, WHY ? What OS Operates that much RAM? Is this a Longhorn thing?

The Opteron CPU is not aimed at the home (or office) user. It is aimed at the server/workstation market. Massve memory can be very useful when handling multigigabyte databases or monster images.
-
Operton is a server mount I believe. That might explain it.
-
Hmm I can think of one program that would like all that memory. Studio Max the more memory you got the more it likes.
-
That explains alot. thanks Nemesis and Iceman.
Still what OS can use that much Ram?

that's true, But even the Underlying OS can't use that effectivly.

Linux. BSDUnix. GNUHurd. The 64bit versions at least.
At least the first two can scale up to massively parrallel supercomputers. I think 2 processors and 12 GB of Ram are well within their abilities.
-
Looks like Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition can. Looks like it can use up to 32GB. Link
-
Let me explain.
A 32-bit processor and OS is only capable of addressing up to FOUR GIGABYTES of RAM.
On the other hand, a 64-bit proccessor and OS is capable of addressing up to FOUR TERRABYTES of RAM.
The consumer level PowerMac G5 has slows for 8 gigs of RAM, since it is a 64 bit processor.
Of course, WinBlows only can use up to 32 GB. Looks like Bill thinks that's enough for anyone
-
That does look About Right, and I can understand that.
BTW, I was looking at some G5's at the apple store. I thought that Steve jobs had promised to have Dual 3gig Proccs on there system by now, at least that's what I thought He said last year? Or am I incorrect on this also.
