FireFox is a stand alone browser that has no connection to MS IE. I think it is better for a number of reasons. it is extensible(you can add different functionality if you want through other small programs people make for it), skinnable(people can also make custom skins), it has built-in pop-up blocker(which IE will get with SP2 for XP) and has tabbed browsing.  Tabbed browsing is where there youcan open a new page in tabs instead of a whole new window.

One thing to remember though. it is only 0.9 so it isn't quite done. It is still labled as a beta. I have used it since 0.5 or so with no major problems. The only bad thing that I can see with 0.9 is the new default skin. it looks as if it isn't finished and is a bit clunky. The skin is clunky, not the interface which is pretty clean and straight forward.

You can still use Outlook Express just fine as FireFox doesn't come with an email client. If you want to try the related email client, Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7 is also out.

As for security measures, I would imagine that it is more secure as it isn't attached to the OS like IE is. As to how much more secure, I can't really say. I'm not a software specialist.

Hope this helps.

Agreed, I have FireFox 0.9 on Linux and 0.7 on Windows.  It's an awesome browser.

Don't forget- BUILT IN POPUP BLOCKING!

And theres lots of different skins.  Try Noia, it's beautiful , and has Mac OS X like buttons.

Just remember that, even though you may stop using it, IE is still on your computer and is tied very deeply into the OS. Make sure you keep it fully updated to avoid as many problems as possible.

Agreed, the new default skin sucks. Just go into Tools, click Themes, and click Get More Themes. There aren't a huge number yet (0.9 has been out for less than a week!) but you should be able to find something to your liking. Personally, I like Noia 2.0 (eXtreme).

Oh, I did that right after I installd it. i wasn't going to look at that skin for longer than necessary. I just went back to the Qute skin as that is the one that matches the Thunderbird skin the best.

There don't seem to be any Thunderbird 0.7 skins yet - I guess people are less interested in how their email client looks. than how their browser looks. The one I use fits in better with KDE on my work machine though. Looks odd on Windows at home, but I like a bit of consistancy.

0.9 is definitely a huge improvement - 0.8 sucked on both operating systems I use (slow in Windows, looked awful in Linux) but I've now switched from IE and Konquerer to it.
