Title: Remember when Games where Fun?
Post by: Sirgod on July 07, 2004, 06:12:44 pm
Remember when Games where fun?

I'm writing this partly as a Cathartic Exercise, and Partly as A Review on One persons Inside View of Forums, Games, and Most of All Friendship there In.

My Name is Stephen, and I went by the Name Sirgod for years. Over the last few Years, I've been Asked to Moderate, Test, and Help out On Many Various Games, and companies. My Favorite, and Like a First Love, has always been Taldren. Is that Geeky? Yes It is, But IT's also a Passion that Can consume a person If not Carefull.

Taldren has Recently closed there Doors, and with It a Part of My life that I Respected Very Much. The True Horror is what happened afterwords. Rumors Ran rampent, Former Employees Had words, and Long term Friendships Where almost lost Forever. Thankfully The Community was very close, and Responded to the Forums Being shut down, By Many offers to Host there own. To this end, I have even more respect for my friends there.

What Hurt the Most, was seeing the Developers at each other. It was always Civil, But the Underlying anger was there across the Board. Having known many of them, I was Torn, felt Like I had to choose sides...

This was not an Unusual Situation for me though, I had been a Moderator for them for quite some time, and Even Before That, I tried to be helpfull in my endeavors. I can recall my first post on an Old Interplay Board. It was also the first Forum I had Joined with the Idea of being a part of the game as a whole. I was scared to death. With a name like Sirgod, It has the Ability of ticking off people. I was lucky, I had used that name in AD&D Gaming Groups since the 70's, and It had been a running joke for along time. As It was, The Developers where also Fans, and took an intrest in my views. I can only thank them for that, and for there Friendship over the Years.

Things changed though, both Politicly, and Internally. One Poster, whom I consider a Very good Friend, Led me Back to Christianity. More Helped my family over a rash of bad Medical Problems, and also a Death in my family. The Friendship and the Love I felt for them Overpassed the Games that they Produced. Even today, I see the Stragglers hanging on to the same Relationships that we formed over many a Battle.

Friendships are still being made everyday, and Debate is also had. What made Taldren Unique was not the games, But the reaching out to discuss Taboo topics on a game forum. Erik allowed us to Discuss Politics, Religion, Children, Life, Science, Commercialism, etc. He did this in a Manner where we could always learn something. The Games where secondary to the Family we had made, at least for me. I still played in Dynaverse campaings, But the People where the real fun. I've seen Groups of People who would never Seem to be friends, Travel to each others homes. They share there Pain, and Happiness with each other, and Even A Rolling Pin or two to the head sometimes.

Like the Topic states, remember when Games where Fun? I sure do, But the People are what made It so. For that, I thank everyone of you For allowing me into this small part of the world, and For the Fun I've had.

Here's to the Next 10-20 years of Community.

Well written Steven.
I've produced enough garbage and vitrol over the last 2 or 3 or 4 years to make folks here despise me. Well deserved too. But most have forgiven me my rants and antics, I don't know that I could do the same if I was in someone else's position. It speaks alot for the character of the folks that play the game and frequent the boards.
That is my personal view, not being party to the inner workings, for which I am grateful.
Thank you Steven for the support you have given me, I appreciate it.

LikkerPig, You where always Ok in My book. And as much as any one else, I',m always here for anyone who Might need to talk.

The Big secret with me, Is That I try to Find something good about everyone, and Play on that.

Let's Take Sethan for example. a Master of trivia, He has A Beard, He works hard, and He always tries to Be honest and show a Differant way of looking at things.

So What Do I do? I remind him of the Proper Hand Placement when Reciting the Pledge of Allegience. Something he seems to forget from time to time.  ;D ;D ;D

That's all It Is Bro, Find that thing that Makes people feel good about themselves, and try To Keep there Spirits up. God only know's , I've had people here Help me out.

You will probaly think this is stupid, but the first time I saw your handle Stephen, it came out in my mind as sigrod, a viking name!

It stuck with me until you made that big banner signature at Taldren, and I said to myself "Idiot! His name is SIR GOD!
:-X

This community has helped me more than any of you can know.

This spring, I decided, at age thirty with a mortgage and a wife, and two kids, to go back to college and pursue a career in Network Administration.  The kicker is, my wife doesn't work, so I've had to juggle my normal house stuff, 40 or better hours a week work and going to school full time (I refuse to let this degree take more than 3 years).  AT any rate, my game playing has been reduced to a round of Tiger Woods PGA tour every couple of weeks.

The good news is, I'm on the Dean's list and plan to remain there.

This board and the couple of minutes a day I get to check out a couple of topics really does take the load off and make life a bit easier.  Thank you.

This game still is a hell of a lot of fun.  Yeah we flame each other but so what?  Who doesn't argue with there friends and family.  The current crop of flame wars is NOTHING compared to the stuff i heard used to happen in the past (I'm a "newbie" compared to many of the Dnya-Geezers).  Most of the flame-wars i've gotten into are with people who i consider friends.

I intend on playing SFC:OP as long as I have a PC that will run it.  Greatest game ever made an still a hell of a lot of fun.

Can't argue with that, since I was 8 years old back in 1970 I wanted to fly Federation and Klingon ships, SFC let me do it for the very first time in a visual medium (instead of the mind's eye with SFB).

Other games may be better, but I will always play this game.

I may buy a new game once in a great while, but SFC still draws me back, and probably will until Windows falls from the market and support for Wintel machines goes with it.

I take this post title to the extreme.

Let me translate that somewhat.

I've got an old computer besides this one. It's Win98, 200Mhz, about 128 MB ram, and roughly 6 Gig's of HD space. I use it to play old DOS games that I fell in love with when I started using computers. I will always think that Castles II and Daggerfall(no pun intended) are pinnacles of game publishing.

So yeah, I think games have gone south lately. It is a great sign that Baldur's Gate, SFC, and the other greats got published. But there are others that only bring down the average.

I remember reading something somewhere(I'll google it after this post)...it made an excellent point.

You go into a music store, you can find thousands of records. You go into a good one you can still find Vinyl.

You go into a movie store you can find thousands of movies.

You go into a bookstore you can find thousands of books.

You go into a game store you find 50, 100 titles at most.

Something's wrong with that picture.

TC all,

Merlin

And how many of those games do you really want to buy and play?  The last game I got was the Conquests expansion to Civ III a Christmas present from my wife.  Made all the more profound because she hates the amount of time I spend playing Civ.

I've played the hell out of it and keep doing so.  But at times I want to play something else, something different.  The problem is, I wander the game section of whichever store I am in and all I see is crap, nothing that jumps out and grabs me.
