I just wanted to see what you may think about this.
Notice the steadily declining activity with the Starfleet Command community? Surely we should be happy that we have Dynaverse.net to let there be a chance for a new continuance. So here is an idea...
Let there be a lifting of all bannings.
I can think of more reasons to advocate this than to oppose it.
In opposition. Some people have done some pretty petty things that may have warrented banning and now they get a second chance? Perhaps so.
In favor. What have we got to lose? Can anyone deny we could stand an infusion of participation? That it just might get a little more interesting? That they could always become re banned if they prove that they should be?
I, for one miss, Atrahasis. The reasons should be self evident. And might I recount that it was suggested that there be a cooling off period? The Taldren forum we came from doesn't exist anymore. That should be cool enough.
How about you? Who do you miss haunting the boards?
-
Too My knowledge, Atra Isn't banned from these Boards, But I could be wrong.
as far as an Amnesty Un Banning, why would I want the Host's here to Have to go through the Headaches those who where Banned caused again?
Stephen
-
Sure, I understand that. Perhaps I underestimate the necessity and work involved. But perhaps not. If all bannings carried over then surely most of those banned have long since moved on. I just think we have more to gain than to lose from it. Or am I naive?
PS. BTW, Hi Steven. Havn't said anything to you in ages. Hope all is as well as can be for you.
-
This site was started with no bans.
Bans were earned.
Some were lifted.
Offenders repeated same behaviour. (typicaly the same behaviour displayed on taldren and other sites, and the reason they got banned there)
Bans were reinstated.
Almost all of the currently banned people are in 1 of 2 groups
1.) Registering with fake emails and abusive usernames.
2.) Abusive/Insulting language.
-
Sorry Rouge...
People get banned for a reason. They cause the moderators, who give of thier time and money by maintaining these boards, to have to invest time policing these boards that they would rather be spending with families and other loved ones in the real world.
We are here by the generosity and goodwill of a few. They should have the option of baring those who abuse that hospitality in the face of numerous warnings.
You wouldn't hesitate to ask oreven force an unruley houseguest to leave; I do not think that we should expect the moderators to treat troublemakers any differently in this home that they built for us than in the ones that they have built for themselves.

Yeah Rogue, I miss Atra too. He as well as everyone else got a fresh start here. I've heard conflicting stories on whether or not he's currently banned.
:scenario: IIRC, once banned you may request reinstatement after a predetermined period. If a person has a temporary (say one week, for example) ban and never applies for reinstatement, I guess that would make them permanently banned, but by there own choice?
We've already had the return of some people banned at Taldren who are contributers. That's the good news. Unfortunately, some digressed and got themselves booted here as well. Hopefully anyone who honestly wants to contribute to the community, even just verbally, will find a way to coexist here.
...and Kim, you kill me. ;)

Hi Rod, I approve of how you said that. And that's the purpose of bringing it up. Certainly I'm not the only one who isn't up with the current state of things. I just wanted to throw it out to see what people had to say and what the possibities are. Much has been done and there are still many possibilities. I've seldom come across anyone I just dislike here. If there is nothing to talk about then so be it. If there are situations that need reconsideration then perhaps it can brought up.

This is from WaterTiger. He wants me to tell Likker that he has boob jop.He misses Kim rolling Pin and he misses Cleaven mind.In other words he misses you guys.I wonder when his ban is up?

Besides, she's asian, and Clark likes Asian.
Stephen, always pointing out members who help Members. ;D ;D ;D

Does that mean Clark is gonna be hitting on me?
Dunno about that, how does he look in a gimp suit?
I gotta write a book on derailing threads, it comes so natural...

I made a mistake WT meant to tell Likker that WT got a boob jop.I guess the person I miss is Auntie Ann to give you all spanking when you are being bad.

Atra started here with a clean slate.
He started his same old BS and got banned for a week.
Created a new name to skirt the ban and posted more same old BS and got the first perma ban on this site.
Letting him come back here, aint gonna happen.

For what it is worth...
I have been involved in the SFC gaming community since 12/99. During that time it has been my experience that those who can self-justify acting outside the rules of good taste and this community once will almost always do it again. And only a very few are ever banned. Most get a warning. Of those, the ones I would categorize as "positive contributors" take the warning and move on. I feel that anyone who does not fit into that category falls into the "good riddance to bad rubbish" category. Forgive the gross generalizations, as I am certain that someone or two will have exceptions to my statements. But those are my feelings, nonetheless.

Autolycus? Frodo for sheer entertainment value?

Who was the guy years ago that used to post the really long runon sentences, with no punctioation or capitalization? Been bugging me for a while as I can never remember his name, but I used to get a kick out of reading them just for the entertainment value.

Legion? He supported the position that intelligent people in the world needed to switch to text-mssg speak, so that we could communicate more ideas in less time. He did some great mods, but I could never finish any of his posts without losing his train of thought.

Yo. EmeraldEdge, I see Capt. Stumpy about two - three times a week here. He post's alot in Hot Topics. Love talking to that guy.

You know our community is getting on in years when we start pining about our lost members. What's it been, five or six years now?
I'm in total agreement with Stephen and Crim's list. I'de like to add Miles to the list, as a fellow level-headed Canadian for the OT forum would be nice.

Never meant to insinuate that he wasn't... However the "level-headed" line just made him and GW spring to mind... In the OT area... at least.
I am sure most people here are great guys in general... except for Alien... she is a pretty funny looking guy I expect...

Well, I'm not quite gone yet. I'm still intending to join in an upcoming OP campaign but given my irregular access to suitable multiplayer net connection speeds I can't be a nutter. I still am working on the giant campaign map and occasionally practice single player to keep my pathetic skillz up. I'm definitely part-time casual these days but I'm not quite out.
BTW Emerald, seriously considering going back to Romulan for the next campaign I can play. Last time I embarrassed myself with the Gorn so I figured I'd give them a break. The Klingons booted my **s out long ago so I can't go back there. :P

Viking
Crimson Knight
CK is still around. You can reach him on the GZ boards. Viking is in England. His wife got a job over there and he doesn't have a suitable internet connection. We over at PGC still keep in touch with him. He's done with SFC, though....just got bored with it, I think.
-
theSea was a great person to have around. I also miss Blyre.
Thanks, Pal. I've been trying to scrape up the money for a new computer for ages now (still trying to get settled here in Pottstown), but between car repairs and other associated (and costly) crapola, I can never seem to get a significant amount of money together. PA is a lot more expensive than I thought. PM me sometime. :)
Oh, and I miss all you guys because I don't have regular access as I used to.

Missed y'all. Need to practice a bit and get my chops back.

aw shucks
In a fit of nostalgia I go looking for my old neighborhood and find it's been torn down :(
Definitely makes one feel the old timer when one has been through *two* sets of message boards for a game. Thriving refugee community you've got going on here. Good to see Kahd around - didn't we swap hidden messages in 'no text' posts on the interplay boards waaaay back when? You still toolin' around in D-7's?
I miss the old XC crowd - saw Hawkeye rear his head around here recently, Anyone heard from Hobbes, K'tugh H'egh or Harry Mudd?
Big 'hello' to 762 - you out there bro?
There was a guy on the Taldren boards - darned if I can remember his handle. I think it was a name and number - City boy, liked his reefer and his posts all read like haiku. He ended up playing a lot of Counter Strike (people play CS stoned ?!?!?! Shock! Horror!) and joined the army after 9/11. We started out arguing and ended up as... well I'm not sure if we ever saw eye to eye enough to be friends, but we definitely learned to respect each other's differences. That was a real learning experience for me. Best of luck if you're out there man.
Yea I remember legion5 - now there was an.... interesting.... dude - flew worse than I did and that's saying something. Wrote even worse than he flew.... pained me to read his prose. I hope he was glad when he finally got his Defiant in SFC3 - he certainly had enough of a hard-on for the thing.
Anyone remember 'foo fighters?' who went on to spawn so many imitators - most notably 'moo fighters?' Did we *ever* find out who 'moo fighters' was?
Oh by the way - since I'm sure the individual concerned has probably moved on to more gratifying pursuits, like pulling the wings off of flies... Does anyone remember the super troll who would shift his handle every couple of months and return to troll the OT boards like mad? At one point he was 'I type the facts!' and later he was 'non sheeplike' who I'm pretty sure was later known as 'turbanned one'? British chap - serious wanker. Anyone remember his arch nemesis "I TYPE IN CAPS!"?? That was me. Apologies to anyone I ever brassed off under that moniker - but I really hated that guy and made it my business to harass him any chance I got (a hearty F! YOU! if you're reading this). That was my *only* alternate handle. I'm pretty sure some people figured it out - there were hints. The writing style was a dead giveaway despite my best efforts to hide behind the caps-lock key.
Sigh - my one 'true confession' and now it's out of the bag.
Anyways - many thanks to S'faret and SFCShadow for 'Hailing Frequencies' and my compliments again to Dennis (shadow) for the SFCII & OP strat guides. I know a lot of folks didn't agree with the tactics he offered, or felt he was just reiterating stuff that 'everybody knows' but I thought it was great to have a strat guide that actually had meaningful advice on how to play the game at a reasonably sophisticated level rather than the usual manual recap/level walkthrough/dumb advice book you usually see - go blow the dust off your SFC1 strat guide if you need a reminder of what I'm talking about.
Thanks and appreciation to Khoros and Magnum for the hard work and dedication to supporting a game that the publisher (IMHO) never gave a fair shake. Erik, David and all of the Taldrenites & ex-Taldrenites (you too Jinx, if you ever surface) a million thanks for a great game - you folks all deserved better than you got.
... and others too numerous to name. I practically lived on the Taldren boards for a couple of years. I'd never written so much out of school and you _all_ taught me a lot about the 'real' world, the people in it and myself. I learned a lot about my own beliefs and opinions by defending them against differing points of view and sometimes I even changed my mind on a subject. I had a lot of fun and played a lot of SFC and I will never consider that time spent in that 'virtual' world to have been wasted.
I did mention that I was having a fit of nostalgia, didn't I? Anyways I'm glad to see all of you here keeping the flame as it were. So very much *not* surprised to see Frey, Blade, Alien&Ferritt, Sirgod, J. Carney, Mentat Jon, Nanner Slug, Chris Jones, Hstaphath and so many others.
Life on this end has grown busy and... complicated - so I don't have enough time or mental energy to devote to this community anymore. I never expected to find my handle in the 'whom do you miss' thread - that's for sure! Sigh - I do miss the SFC community. I'll try to lurk in once in a while - ya never know - I disappeared once before and came back. It may happen again. I *think* I still carry a reserve commission in XC and I still have OP installed on my 'puter after a crash and two OS upgrades, even if I don't fire it up very often.
I can hear some of you now - "typical long-winded, pompous theSea post.. hasn't he gushed enough?" And I guess I have.
Not good-bye, but farewell until we meet again.
Pax,
