Title: revisiting an old topic
Post by: Clark Kent on October 12, 2004, 03:16:48 pm
I finally managed to get my hands on a working copy of Windows XP, so now I have a slight dilemma when it comes to upgrading my old compaq 5000 desktop.  Also, at the recomendations of those on this board I also found all the drivers I SHOULD need for my desktop, which I will most likely download tomorrow morning or afternoon between classes (56k at home, high speed wireless at school).
SO now it comes to this:  should I load windows 2000 pro on my presario, or Wndows XP?  Will I need to download windows drivers for XP like I would if i put windows 2kpro on?
Currently, I'm running Windows ME.
Also, is there a place I can go to download the windows updtates as a file, so I can DL from onto my iBook, burn a CD, then put them on my PC when I get home?

I find Windows 2000/3 pro a pain to configure and admin due to the additional server complexity.     If you are familiar with the ins and outs it shouldn't matter much, but I find XP pro is much simpler.

I would suggest going with XP pro. I have had very little problems with XP pro but have heard of people having all kinds of problems with 2000 and XP home. Wish I could get into it more but I am at a friends house who has kindly made me a lunch other then a can of baked beans or corn or pea's as a meal. heheh

Oh Gods EE you went back Yatta again. :smackhead:
So is XP Pro more secure than the home version.

I think that XP pro is more stable, yes. Only reason I have to do a format is because of a virus my roomie got onto my system because he forgot to turn the anti-virus and firewall on one time. other then that, XP Pro has ran like a dream for me.

Well, it would appear that downloading the drivers i need isn't an option.  For some reason I can't connect to the hp FTP site to download.

Apparently they want some sort of name and password, but I'm not finding anywhere to enter either.

Well, it looks like there is no way I'm going to be able to make this happen.  I suspect that Compaq set it up so that only certain computers could download certain files, and since my iBook isn't one of those it's not being let in.  I could try to put the PC on the web and download from home, but that will take hours since I have only a 56k at home.
I hate that stupid PC.

Wow, thanks for sharing that, Alien has an Comcrap computer (5900Z) and I was thinking on getting the XPpro upgrade.  I'd better check from the company before trying it out. :police:

After trying yesterday a dozen times or so I decided to give it one last try after i got home for the evening.  I think the ftp server was down or something, because it let me start the DL at home.  Or maybe it was the school connection.  I dunno.  In any event, i think I'll give it another try sometime today.  I sure am glad I have this iBook to use, though, rather than the PC.  That compaq has always been a pain to get anything done with.
