Can you tell what it is and what show it's from? ;D
-
Ok this is probably wrong, but in a Dr. Who episode called 'Robots of Death', (one of the best episodes from that series) there was a miner that looked similar to that. It floated on top of sand as it were, and filtered ore out of the debre that entered its forward scoops. This ship appears to have 3 scoops forward and the bridge was sort of like that
In any case, great job on it.
-
That is the earth ship from SG-1, right.
-
I'd be a bit disappointed if this is from stargate. Because it does resemble the mining ship from Dr. Who and the episode it was in was in 1977. Its a good design and good designs stand the test of time. The impressive thing about the episode 'The Robots of Death" is that it really is not dated too bad after almost 30 years. The robots were not done so mechaniclly or they would have looked to cheap back them. Then were done with elabortive metaalic masks that were elegantly done. The human crew had elaborate costumes. sort of gothic and the interior set of the ship was laid out well. Expecially for that time.
Sorry if I rambled off topic but it is SciFI after all. Yea what prize are you offering to the winner. Do we get to download the model when its done if we guess correctly?
-
That ship IS the Prometheus, also known as the X-303. Built from technology that came from the Asgard (or Thors people). O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson, aka McGyver) wanted to call the ship Enterprise in the series, but they didn't like that name :P
-
You can get an idea of what the Sand Miner looks like from this image which was used as the front cover of one of the Target novelisations... Other good models were the Zygon (Terror of the Zygons) and Jagaroth (City of Death) ships...

-
Yep thats the X303 Promethious, is General O'Neil had any say in the matter it would have been called the U.S.S. Enterprise... Rofl.... Now that was a good episode
(http://www.myimgs.com/data/markyd/X303_26.jpg)
Strange... once upo a time their used to be loads of x303 modles knocking about, nowadays all the links are dead... I wonder if their was a copyright thingy???
Anyway, its a solid start to whoever made the mesh ;)
-
Ah ..great more Star Gate ships... ;D
Hmmm wonder if I can find a good shot of the Asgard ship "O'Niell" (thats with two L's) might have to wonder into my Dvd collection.
-
Can you tell what it is and what show it's from? ;D
I have a feeling if I scroll down to see the many replies I'd get the answer. :p But having all seven seasons on DVD, I'd say it's the X-303 Prometheus on Stargate: SG-1. Not bad work, too! Now I shall post, then scroll down since I know I was right without having help. ;)
-
Yep, it's the X-303. Loved it the 1st time I saw it. :P She's coming at 2912 polies as she stands, but I'm aiming for 7500 after I add in a little more mesh detail.
Only prize is the joy of playing her in game when she's done. :-[ I've also been wanting to do the Saratoga from Space: Above and Beyond, so you might be seeing more non=Trek stuff from me...kinda trekked out. :P I'll post an update with more detailing later.

Good link, brings back memories. OK well the miner was a bit different than I remembered, still excellant basic design, especially for the time. Who knows that show might have been the inspiaratin for the SG miner.
-
OK, added some details to the mesh...1st time trying the greeble plugin...still coming in under 6000 polies, pretty good. ;)
-
Yep.. its looking great so far sandman ;)
-
Thanx...amazing what skills you remember/discover when you move to a different genre...Trek is so smooth... ;D There are so few pics of this ship, I'm guestimating quite a bit. :P Glad y'all like her. :)
-
Sandman you are still one of my favorites :)
this mesh looks stunning...absolutely amazing work mate :) :P
-
OT - sorry
Sandman. any chance you can give me a link to where u got the pluggin from... would come in really usefull for my galactica ;)
Now back to how good ur model is ;D
-
those greebles are nice and still good poly count. I was wrong about the show it was from, it looks quite a bit different than the Dr. Wo one. They both were sandminers so maybe I can get hal credit? I can see someone who has Sandman for a avater having a use for a sandminer. :)
-
Well, it's not really a sandminer. The "scoops" are gonna have windows. This ship is Earths answer to Anubis's mothership...a heavy battleship if you will. :P But hell, change some details and it could be an industrial miner...plenty of asteroids. ;D
Thanx guys!! ;D
BTW, here's a pic I'm working from, shows the front...
-
A little texturing...
-
I've also been wanting to do the Saratoga from Space: Above and Beyond, so you might be seeing more non=Trek stuff from me...kinda trekked out.
Are you planning on doing an ISSAPC and a SA-43 Hammerhead? Maybe a few Chig ships. I have good reference images for some of them.

Honestly I wasn't, but I could...what's a space carrier without fighters? :P
hey sandman next time i catch you online i will give you some texture tips to help make this beauty even better
Cool, any tips and tricks are appreciated. ;D

Chk your email...sent it to ya. It's the r4 version, but it works in 5 also, just copy/paste into your max plugin folder. :)
-
OK, just about done with the fore section. Question for ya...would it look better with bump and spec maps? If so, how do you do 'em and apply 'em? Thanx for any help.
-
OK, when I'm done with her I'll send you the file. What I really want is to learn more right now...for example, the base hull texture is one I made meself, rather than using Pataflafla's generic one like I usually do, and I think it looks pretty good. :) I see some of the really good textures out there, and they have bump/spec maps and I'm ready for the next level. ;)
-
It would look great with bump mapping... although sfc doesnt support it? so it would look regular ingame.. but for renders bump mapping rocks!
Bump mapping works on the same principle as a lightmap... although the darker the line the more prominent the bump will be, the lighter the line... less bump...
so a white jpeg with black dots would make a dotty bump map... you have to play with bumpmaps, but they look gr8 ;D
PS THANKS for the file ;)
-
Other way around.
actually, its kinda both.
128-grey changes nothing, Black lowers the surface while white raises it.
-
Is it true that you can make a copy of your base texture, posterize or some such and use that as a bump? And how do you apply it? Thanx for the help. :)
-
i have no idea....
may i make a suggestion though?...for your windows, dont put an bevel/emboss...put an innershadow.
-
Never thought of that...Iliked the bevel/emboss because it gives it that indented window look...maybe together? I'll play with it...thanx for the suggestion. :)
-
you can apply your texture as the bump map, the only problem is that if you have a font in white, it bumps that, windows are bumped etc... it can look quite scruffy ;)
and as FOAS said it is the other way round :D rofl been a while since i did a bump map.... :)
Cant wait to see how this turns out as I love the x303 ;)
-
OK, added some more greebles to the boom area and some texture...coming in now a little over 6900 polies. :)
-
This is definately the best piece of work I have seen you do so far.... its A1.... great stuff man.
-
Thanx Stewey!! ;D
-
looking great man cant wait for the release
DD
-
you might want to try upping the contrast of the panels just a bit, or maybe darkening certain areas, just to give it a bit more dynamics
-
very nice indeed!
Okay just so I am not totally out of the loop, Greebels are that fine mesh detail you have added to the surface areas correct? If so man that must be a nice plug-in.
-
here is a copy of the greeble plugin it is pretty cool
-
Damn, forgot you could add a zip to the thread...would have done that sooner when Stewey asked. :P
-
OK, got a little more texturing done...emphasis on little...inventory time at work so... :P
Anyway, here's a couple of shots...
-
Thats looking fantastic!
-
Thanx! :)
-
Thats looking awsome sandman ;)
-
looking great Sandman keep it up ... i only saw this ship on like one episode and never got a good look at it and always wondered what the entire ship looked like thanks for giving this model time and effort
-
Thanx guys!! ;D
There aren't a lot of canon reference pics...blurry screencaps from the show actually, but I found some pics from a guy named Ed Giddings (think he's with Scifi-Meshes) who did an awesome high poly model...that's where those two pics on page 1 are from. So, it might not be canon, but it looks good. ;D
-
OOOOOOOHHHHHH
I Like this work :)
I am not a fan of the ship's design (I only like a handfull of SG1ships) but man did you model it well
She's a real beaut :)
-
Thanx Az!! ;D
-
And some more...
Which color windows do you prefer...the kinda lavander on the bow, or the bluish on the tower?
-
I like the ones on the bow. This ship will make good renders I think. Pretty impressive with the 6k poly count. I must confess I never saw it in the show.
-
Shaping up to be a real BEAUTY ;)
-
Thanx!! ;D
Won't be doing anything today...just got done with inventory at work and I'm beat. :P 2 nights of that...got done early, so they let me go at 2:20am...then, unable to get right to sleep, I sat in the livingroom drawing and actually designed a pretty cool non-Trek ship. Unfortunately, I don't have anyway to get the thing online except to model it. :-\ Hell, I might just take a picture of it, I drew top, left, front, back; came up with a backstory as I was drawing...anyway, did it all on a big piece of cardboard, so it might photograph well. :P
I'll keep y'all posted on this and the design. :)
-
Gonna try and do some more on this, but my back has gone out again and everything hurts...sitting, lying down, standing. :( Bad back sux. :( :(
-

Dam sorry to here this. Thats the worst when you can't find a position to get comfortable. :P
-
Get better soon and get this bad boy released ;)
-
Thanx guys!! :)
Yeah, a nice hot bath works wonders, but still a couple of hours 'til I can do that...kids still awake and only one bathroom, lol. ;D My daughter's ten and doesn't need to see her dad like that. :o Usually when this happens, it takes about 3-4 days to get better...that is unless it's like earlier and I herniate a disk...then it's months. Thankfully, I know the difference between the two, and this is your garden variety, muscle strain due to Kyphosis and overuse. :( Oh well, soon... ;)
-
Looking real good Sman: nice modeling and interesting subject. I havent seen Stargate.
If possible, try adding very slight shadowing to the texture where the mesh is recessed and around the greeb so it doesnt look so new and uniform. itll give it a little more relief.
-
may i make a suggestion though?...for your windows, dont put an bevel/emboss...put an innershadow.
Agreed, windows are usually too small for an effective bevel/emboss. try a tight inside shadow using your window layer as a selection.
-
Thanx LS!! ;D
When I did the tower windows, I used both...thought it look ok, but I'll try just the inner shadow. :)
-
Hey if it looks ok then go with it of course, usually windows are very tiny so a bevel wont show up but on larger one 4-5 pixels then bevel might start haveing effect. ;D
-
OK, got a chance to do some more work on her...
-
lookin sweet, SM.
-
Thanx....nice to get a chance to work on it. ;D
-
OK, just about finished...need to adjust some things, but pretty much ready to release. What ya think?
-
Sweetness
:)
