There is a bright side. The pundits were WRONG! Morgan Stanley (which recently had to pay a big fine to the S.E.C.) was WRONG! Oil is still king, and the maritime stocks are breathing new life, even when the American market is down and out.
Jim Rogers and Soros made 4200% in ten years from commodities trading in the 70's. Rogers and Soros do not speak anymore, but Rogers believes commodities are still king as the world is getting hungrier and hungrier for consumables. Even though I do not like his holier than thou thinking, he does have the knack for beating the crap out of the market averages.
Just as the hurricanes helped fuel the spike in oil prices due to refining and transport concerns, so did the tsunami help the shipping companies even more, which goes well in hand with a normal rise in oil prices as it is winter.

Nice to know that in an uncertain stock market, there are still some great opportunities to be had. You gotta love a world in transition. ;D

My IRA is down about $90 this week, but it's still up almost $3000 since August.. so I'm not complaining yet.
-
Yes, by definition it must. I'll say no more. ;)

You must have a good fund manager there. What sectors they stick with? Thanks for the reminder there Dracho, when I get married to Virginia, we will have a joint tax return so IRAs are a great tax shelter on the yearly returns. I am also waiting on Toyota to release the Highlander hybrid, which also gets a great one time tax break for the year as a clean air vehicle.

Actually Jack, I set up a self-managed fund with Fidelity. Currently, I own Fidelity Contrafund (FCNTX), Fidelity Freedom 2020 (FFFDX), Fidelity Magellan (FMAGX), Fidelity Puritan (FPURX), and The Williams Companies (WMB).
So, thank you for the compliment. :D
Now my wife's Janus Fund is a dog, though her Janus Life Sciences does ok.

I paid some dinero for a independent sector report for Maritime and Land Transportation yesterday. Very good stuff and easy to read. I can send a copy if anyone is interested, just PM me your address and I'll get copies made and drop in the mail. The world is not getting smaller and commodities are moving around the globe on an unprecedented scale, is why I like Maritime stocks, and 69% were smoking guns in 2004, with 2005 showing a solid footing no matter where our Dow goes.

Funds?!?
I bought Apple (APPL) at $17 :)
Laugh at the Mac zealots all you want.... as you watch them soon lock-in their $60/share profits ;)

Good to see you DM, and Jerry and I discussed that Monday when Intel crapped out the market, Apple was 6 dollars down. When they released the earnings info the shares were almost up 10 dollars, that's a mighty big profit to chew for one days worth of trading! ;D I'm happy for them, and kicking myself in the arse as Monday I was thinking of buying a 100 shares and could have made anywhere from 800 to 1k for a day's worth of monitoring my Scottrade portfolio. >:(

Hey Jack,
Thanks, I've been busy with a new career. Good to hear you've around...
I actually bought Apple for the longhaul (just before MacOS X hit, and I knew how that would play out...). Many play the APPL short-term game (stock goes up just prior to Macworld or rumor leaks).
Cheers, DM

Air conditioning and environmental control sytems will only go up in value over the next few decades. ;) (till the limit of their usefullness is reached))

Is this guy the you know what? Man, what returns! You do need to save your nickels (Or get a loan from the bank) as it is 10k just to get in on his worldwide game. It would beat the crap out of whatever your bank is charging for interest on your 10k loan. ;D
