Microsoft Office How-to of the Week: Line Numbering in Word

Among the many reasons WordPerfect has been so successful in law offices is its support for many document features. Word isn't as strong in this area, but it does offer the ability to number lines, a key feature in many legal documents.

To add line numbers:

Switch to Print Layout view (use the View/Print layout command or click on the Print Layout button on your toolbar).
Select the area you want numbered. For example, to add line numbers to a paragraph, triple-click anywhere within the paragraph. You can also use the Ctrl + A shortcut (or the menu command Edit/Select All) to select the entire document.
Use the File/Page Setup command.
Choose the Layout tab and look for the "Apply to" box. Make sure it reflects the area you want to add numbers to. For example, if you selected text, the "Apply to" box should be set to "Selected text".
Click on the Line Numbers button. Check the "Add line numbering" text box, then choose the numbering options (beginning line number, increment, and so on). If you want numbers to begin at 1 for the first line and increment by 1 through the end of the document, be sure to select the "Continuous" option in the Numbering section. (The default starts numbering at "1" with each new page.)
