How am I supposed to create a guide when the specs completely change once the game is patched? Volume III's patch just adds ShieldSpace, OK, but the back of Volume I's specs changes from arc statistics to near-OP specs. Why did they do this?

To make SFC 1 more like SFB This was done way before SFC II : EAW was on the market, which was almost 2 years before OP was on the market.. Patch v1.03 for SFC 1 was released 14 Jan 2000, SFC II : Empires at War game was released Sept 2000, OP game was released Sept. 2001, and SFC 3 game was released Nov. 2002.. as such, the changges in SFC 1 came before the other games were on the market.. as such, the other games were derived from SFC 1.. not the other way around..
SFC 1, SFC II : EAW, and SFC II : OP are based on Starfleet Battles (SFB) as the source for the games, thus all patches were designed to make the games more like SFB, but also keep racial balance...
SFC 3 is based on TV TNG era and breaks away from SFB, thus the dumbed down interface and controls.
Hope that this makes since.

They tried to make Volume I more like Volume II which was closer to SFB, got it.

Opposite.. they based SFC II on the changes in SFC 1 which were closer to SFB

Ah, ok..... where does one get SFB anyway?

Updated SFB rules can be found at
http://www.starfleetgames.com/sfb/errata/erratoc.html
Some of the SFB source material is included in SFC 1 in the 14 East\Starfleet Command\SFB directory..
I also have most of the SFB stuff in PDF format.. but is almost 1 GB in size..
SFC is based on the SFB Doomsday rule set.
SFB FAQ is located at http://www.starfleetgames.com/faq.htm
Hope that this helps..
If you like a more complete listing of SFB material, let me know and I will see about trying to get it to you. Can't make any promises due to size of content.
Here is one of the FAQ answers if it helps satisfy you :
WHY ISN'T THERE AN SFB COMPUTER GAME? OR AT LEAST PLAY AID SOFTWARE?
ADB, Inc. has contracted with Interplay to produce STARFLEET COMMAND, which will have many aspects of Star Fleet Battles. Play-aid software may follow in future pending resolution of some questions between ADB, Inc., and Paramount. Until that happens, NO ONE can do computer software specifically for SFB. You can do your own and use it yourself, but you cannot sell it and you cannot even upload it or give it away for free (since that would cost us sales when we can finally do legal software).
as for physical copies of SFB material, check your used book stores, or any comic book store that sells gaming material.. more than likely they have it or can order it.
