Motivated by borrowing other's PC's without needing to take the time to purge them of spyware and viruses, I happened upon these (which I'd heard of but not tried yet):
First I tried the old QNX4 boot floppy: http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/qnx/demodisk/
doesnt work on new hardware but is impressive on an older PC... (I had it working when it first came out)
then I found this list: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
...anyway now I'm posting from Firefox on SLAX: http://slax.linux-live.org/
I used MySLAX creator: http://myslax.rabidhutch.co.uk/
to create a SLAX KillBill Edition v 5.0.5 bootable CD including all the
current modules: http://slax.linux-live.org/modules.php
(the KillBill edition includes wine)
I'm quite impressed! ;D  **** 4 stars!
Still have some exploring to do...
Got a copy of KNOPPIX too but havent tried it yet: http://www.knoppix.org/
Also curious to see how the FreeBSD liveCD works out: http://livecd.sourceforge.net/
but its more of a utilitarian manual type thing from what I gather.
I think the latest full QNX will boot and install to memory only as well. Gonna give it a try if I get time.
Anyone else have any "LiveCD" experiences? Lots of potential... especially with large "thumb" drives, It would be fun to create a custom one from FreeBSD or QNX with a webserver all preconfigured and loaded with content... :flame:

I haven't really done anything with them beyond boot them and see that they do work. I have made copies for friends to experiment with as well.
Additional LiveCDs: MandrakeMove, SUSELive and Gnoppix (gaming version of Knoppix).
For Linux Distrowatch (http://distrowatch.com/) is a good central location for links to most distributions that are current.

Yeah I looked at the games version of Knoppix, but it wasn't as up-to-date...
The remote desktop / VNC client on SLAX (Krdc) is dandy... I'm lovin this. ;D

Running Knoppix now, liking it better, considerably more complete. OpenOffice and everything already installed!

I've decided that I do need one LiveCD (or LiveDVD) but I don't think that I can get it. I need a LiveCD for Windows to play games on so that I can migrate more fully to Linux while still being able to play SFC. Do you think that I can persuade Microsoft that is a viable market segment?
There is a LiveCD for DOS. Link to FreeDOS site (http://www.fdos.org/). Well not MS-DOS of course. But it does work.

I tried SuSE using their live cd prior to installing it on the hard drive. A nice preview to see if its compatible.
I've recently upgraded to SuSE 9.3. Fairly complete.

How do you burn something to a CD as a data disc? I am trying to figure out how to move DIVX from my online computer to the offline one.

Wrong thread kinda, but in XP it is built in: just pop in the blank CD and wait for the popup and select "open writable CD folder" then drag files onto the window that appears, and select "burn files to CD" from the file menu... something like that as I recall...
For a more complete CD/DVD burning solution get yerself a copy of Roxio Easy Media Creator: http://www.roxio.com/ (The one I'm most familiar with)
There are other burner programs out there that perhaps others can reccomend. Alcohol, CDRWin, CloneCD... etc.

Here's something to watch:

(the XP teaser is a burn though...)

I just discovered editing a php website over ftp with Konqueror and Kwrite... extremely efficient... 8)

A new Knoppix version was just released (V3.9).
KNOPPIX 3.9 released
KNOPPIX Version 3.9 is now available on the mirrors and via BitTorrent from http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/. Changes vs. 3.8:
* OpenOffice 2.0 BETA (german and english)
* KDE 3.4
* Kernel 2.6.11 update
* dist-upgrade (all software packages from current Debian/sid)
This will be probably be the last "single CD" version of KNOPPIX. Starting from Version 4.0 (coming soon), the project will be split into a "Light" CD version, and a "Maxi" DVD release. Stay tuned for more news at a later time on the KNOPPIX page.

If you need a small distribution there is Feather Linux (http://featherlinux.berlios.de/download.htm).
Feather Linux Console Edition is now available. Feather Linux Console Edition is an edition of Feather Linux designed for rescuing corrupted or crashed systems, while still being smaller than 50Mb. It contains a wide array of rescue applications, including The Sleuth Kit and captive-ntfs
