Tonight is a special night for me.
After 6 years of being a Boy Scout and another 5 years as a Cub Scout, I appear before a special board of review to decide if I have met the requirements to achieve the rank of Eagle. I'm hoping this is just a formality and I'm fine, but I think I'm just a bit nervous.
So wish me luck :)

Eagle Scout? Man Good Luck and God Bless.
Damn that is too cool AJ. You'll make It, and If you need a recomendation, well you've got one here from me.

My brother is an Eagle Scout. He said it wasn't that hard unlike the Order of the Arrow. I think all you really need for Eagle is about 21+ merit badges and some comuinty service time? Sorry it's been years since he made it!
Good luck to you and keep us posted. I'm sure you'll do fine!

Can you quote the scout oath...the scout law...how about now go in depth on what you've done to exemplify the scout law in the past year.
To tell the truth, I think Eagle Scout in the US is more exempliary than order of the arrow.
around 75% of the order of the arrow guys I've met are real things I can't mention here (of course the other 25% are great guys which I'm sure your brother is).
I'd say only about 10% of Eagle Scouts that I've met have been despicable.
From the way I understand it though, order of the arrow is more of a popularity contest...with a symbolic ritual of fasting for a few meals, some work/service, and then some rites.
Eagle Scout one has to at least earn merit badges and stick with a program most see as being for boys and laughed at in school (yes, I admit I laughed a little at the boy scouts, but I did respect those that got the Eagle Rank to tell the truth, more so now when I'm working. Eagle Scouts are something that I actually do consider when hiring...Order of the Arrow on the otherhand, I sure hope they have a good boy network because most of them haven't impressed me...the ones that did impress me I beleive were also Eagle Scouts though).
I'm certain your brother is a great person and is in that 25% of people I'd think were great, but OotA guys give me the opinion that they just simply seemed to be the popular guys in their troop, not that they actually really worked for anything to really attain that "Order" per se. In my opinion of course.
And also realize I laughed at the high schoolers that were in Boy Scouts when I was in school (which I suppose now looking back at it made me somewhat of a scumbag in HS...even more so now that I realize a few of my cousins were in Boy Scouts).
Interesting enough, Scouts can also be found elsewhere in the world as well...just a little trivia for you...

PS: Good Luck Alidor...all things aside...I'm certain you'll do fine and pass.

Good Luck... kick some promotion board ass man!

Its actually interesting that people here have heard of the Order of the Arrow, I'm from Unami Lodge, which is the first one ever. It is pretty much exactly as you described it and a popularity contest (our troop stopped sending people since they didn't think anyone was qualified). I'm probably one of the youngest OA members in our troop and I'll turn 18 soon and be gone from the troop

LOL ;D
In 2001 I went to the National Jamboree and there were troops from all over the world (even though its a national jamboree and not a world jamboree). I met a guy who talked about the World Jamboree, though (I think he was from Thailand. I didn't talk to him then, it was a few days later when I went shotgun shooting.
Anyway, it wasn't so bad tonight. All the work was done ahead of time anyway, I just had to answer a few questions. I think I was a bit lucky that one of the people asking questions is from my troop (I think he used to be assistant scout master, now he just shows up and complains about something ;) ). I found out that they've only failed two people and one of them was Andy Reid's son.
They asked me questions about my project, my favorite merit badge, and what "A Scout is friendly" means to me (apparently, you used to have to give a minute long explanation, which I'm glad I didn't have to do). After that, they talked among themselves and decided that I could become an Eagle Scout.
Alien, that's pretty much it, although it was still a lot of work. I think I earned something like 32 merit badges (some of them being easy stuff like Basketry or Fingerprinting, though). The project is definately the big part. Took me awhile to plan it and it took me 27 hours to complete it (combining all the time everyone who helped out spent on it, it took 97 hours).
I would say how I feel now that I'm an Eagle Scout, but I don't think its hit me yet. ;)

Congrats, Alidar. That is a major accompishment, and truly a sign of your standards and heart. You, young man, are a role model.

Congratulations on attaining an Eagle Rank. Who are you going to get to sit in the Eagle's Nest and give you the Eagle's Oath (or is it promise or something like that)?
-
I didn't even go as far as Weblos. I really hope you make it!

I never was a Boy Scout...for obvious reasons! :flame:

Congrats AJ, I knew you could do It.
I got kicked out of the Boy scouts though. They had a Problem with me eating all the Brownies. ;)

Congrats A.J. Having known Lion's Club members and others, having "Eagle Scout" status DOES help open doors in some societies which do a lot of networking in jobs as well as helping the community. ;) It's sort of like having a degree, it's not that you know your stuff (requirements for the degree) inside and out, it just shows that you can stay dedicated and complete the missions assigned. :)

Fly like an eagle, bro. Soar upon the winds of imganination, honor, and fortitude.

Let me add my congrats to you AJ! Well done!
As for the OA being a popularity contest . . . Maybe Hawaii is diffirent? It didn't seem that way to my brother or to my cousins. I do remember, however, that my bro had to go camping and for that weekend he wasn't allowed to speak. No one was. Mind you my brother wasn't the most talkative child but as soon as mom and I picked him up it was like a dam had broken and he wouldn't shut up for the whole damn ride home! Freaking 45+ min of yak yak yak! ::) :D Ahh well come to think of it he isn't such a good boy scout anymore . . . :o

Congratulations!
It's been so long since I even thought about scouts that I don't remember what I had. I know I was one merit badge and a service project away from getting my eagle, and stopped. I was on an early course for it too, so it was a big sticker in my dad's side that I didn't finish. He was an Eagle, my brothers are both Eagles, and he was a scout master, so you can imagine. What was your project, by the way?
-
That's a shame. There are a lot of people who just stop short. One person I know I thought would definately make Eagle, since he was so dedicated. He ended up doing a lot of other things and never actually made it past the rank of Star (didn't even get Life).
As for my project, it was actually tricky getting a project. I had to ask a bunch of different people before the church where we hold our meetings suggested something that might work. It was basically a landscaping project, where I had to plant some flowers, remove some barberry bushes (evil plants from hell) and plant some boxwood. I took Lanscape Architecture merit badge about 3 years ago, but it didn't really help (but I did get to ask the merit badge counsler for advice since he was an assistant scout master). We had 3 other people become Eagle Scouts around the same time, so one of my biggest problems was getting people to show up to help at my project. Another problem is that I stayed with my old troop when (I've been with this troop the whole time, and I've known my scoutmaster since I was in Cub Scouts, so I thought I should finish with them). The difficulty was the fact that I live in Delaware, but I moved from Havertown, PA.
Still, when I finally finished, I thought it looked pretty cool. :)

Are scouts armed?
If so I'll fax-em a price sheet.
I can bet no one will laugh at em anymore.
