...What seems to be the deal with what appears to be the plagiarizing of models???
I have been downloading models for over 5 years, first from the TALDREN and lately from here directly and BATTLECLINIC.
What I have found is that some of the older models are accredited to the wrong persons and some are renamed and re-credited and I think the most disturbing is the lack of READ ME files in some models that I have from Atra, DTW, P81, Mackie, and older models from the long gone Eras at War site sponsored by APOCENT.
Seems no one wants to "borrow" from Wicked Zombie, guess this has to do with the blood thirsty wolves, but the current crop of models seem to be to be safe for the moment but to hijack models because the original creator or creators are no longer in the forum just seems to be just wrong.
Would appreciate feed back on this from forum members.
Am I just wrong on this subject or is this the new way of business? Because I gots some really cool Terran Empire textures for WZ's Lexinton Command Cruiser and I ain't afraid of the big bad wolves....

This should still apply as far as Dynaverse.net is concerned:
http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163351890.0.html
I think Furyofaseraph is still maintaining the thread.
(Myself, I went to great lengths to include all original files and readmes in my SFB-OP-04 (http://www.dynaverse.net/go.php?id=51&source=downloads) mod)

It isn't hijacking, just a lack of information regarding most of the ships. Some don't even have readme files included and some others' readmes were deleted completely.
That's especially the case with some of the game mods where readmes and other extra files were deleted to cut down on space and the whole mod had one large combined readme to cover them. When those mods were split up and the individual ships reposted, there weren't any readmes anymore to signify what was who's.
Also, Moonraker's (http://www.universeatwar.org/drs/Moonraker/) old ships never had readme files to begin with so when they got kitbashed or modified by Eras of War and other sites, there was nothing to signify it. Some people submitted those ships to the sites after EoW went down and for whatever reason, they are listed as the authors - which certainly isn't intentional.
And it's bloodthirsty wolves, creatures intelligent enough to go right for the jugular. Big Bad Wolves are for Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. DRS doesn't employ animals stupid enough to try and impersonate old ladies or try to blow down brick houses with shear lung power.

I personally hope that all of us who remian here can be VERY carefuly to give credit where credit is due. I know that on the few models I have had a hand in NO mention is made of my contribution ( even though it was only as the design coodinator and the mesh .. etc was others who made the model)
IMHO .....
It is the VERY least we can do to give proper acknowlegments to those who spent their time and efforts on keeping the dream of the community alive...
thanks

now i have in my own personal game modified the textures of certain models for my own experiment with new weapon points and even trying to learn how to do the renaming of ships and their respective NCC registries.
i have never played them on-line since i have never been a fan of on-line playing of anything. i do though make sure that if i keep the model i have the CORRECT read-me and even go as far as to turn the read-me into a word doc. instead of a notepad doc.
i do this cause it just looks better with formal heading and, not to offend anyone, but surprise surprise surprise we got misspelling for days.
seriously though allot of talented people, regardless of their personal points of view and personal opinions, that are gone forever from this forum worked long and hard to try to make this game prosper and be more enjoyable for others.
let's not slip into a realm of legal "inducements". napster we ain't. or imagine battleclinic becoming a pay for play model site.
sorry as much as i like this game i wouldn't pay for WZ's best models even if they had butt nekkid orion girls in the promenade.
butt nekkid cardassian girls...not that is another thing.
thank for your feed back, keep up the good work and ideas for models and watchout for each other.
i gotta go make the world safe for liberty, justice and thong girls everywhere.

I will often make some slight modifications to ships I download and I've converted many ships from SFC2 and BC to SFC3, but I've only submitted a very small handful of them for download, and I only submit them for download after I contact the original author and ask for permission (even if they aren't in the "ask permission first" group). If nothing else, this helps me confirm that this person is the author of the model. I always include the original readme plus one that I make crediting me for the conversion and the original author for the mesh and textures.

well considering there shouldnt be any of my kitbashes on battleclinic... i dont know.... but what can I do ::)
-
perhaps creating a dump of submitted mods that don't have readmes and allow the community to identy them. I ahd a bunch a couple years ago and posted pix of them all on taldren and had about 75% success. Also, what I started doing at BCfiles is a no readme, no post policy. Some mods are allowed through (IE vids sound fx ect if they're ripped from say paramount) but otherwise not. Perhaps the same needs to be done? Just a thought. I've not seen an actual case of mod theft in a while. They do make for good flamewars, hard to miss.

I never really consider this a problem for my models as all of them so far are based on the SFB universe and are of original design. I don't think any has (or anyone wants) to make kitbashes of my models.

Granted. Some of the models I have texture bashed do not have readme files. But if you go to my site and enter the DL section you will notice that each and every model is credited in great detail in the description.
Sorry if anyone is butt hurt about the lack of credits at battleclinic, but as it's not my site, it's not my problem.

i personally add always a readme to my files and there have been still guys that have ignored those completely and converted them to another game and sayed they could not give proper credit to the original creator because there was no readme and that is even a problem, some people think they could do what they wan't with others work because its available and that is the wrong thinking, if the creator don't want his work used in any other way than the people should respect that and there are so many good modellers out there that the people could ask if they want a model of this ship or that station if one has made it and don't give permission to conversion to other games or to use it for kitbashes
in the Armada community there is a unwritten law, if there is no readme in one file of a model or other work than it is not used by others even if its the only thing available and that shows the respect for other guys work
