As some of you know i dropped off the face of the planet a couiple of weeks ago. This was caused by my Capacitors on my Gigabyte Board Exploded! with the Orange crappy electrolyte fluid (GUNK OF DEATH!) so be warned and cheak your motherboard once in a while for the black cyliders with silver caps to see if they are buldging (a must cheak on boards around 3 years old)
over 90 Gigs of work has been lost including the Vulcan fleet and all my textures unless i can acess the data with help from my systems admin should know in about a week, also need to catch up with everyone online. plans have been set back a small amount for OutaLance so im going to need to burn the midnight oil with ModelsPlease and find out what our hydra like heads have been working on and how we can get them working together.
other than that <head turns 360 degrees "I'm Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow ..... man, so sorry to hear bout this.... I really admired the Vulcan fleet stuff I did see.... want to put up a modded server with some Vulcan ships and would've loved to use yours. I've got a few from battleclinic that are decent. Anyhow - I hope you can recover some of your fantastic work!!

I had a similar problem with my Shuttle AK 32 board about two and a half years ago. The capacitors didn't actually explode, but they leaked. My system was acting funny, and when I got around to checking the hardware, there was orange gunk caked on top of and underneath the capacitors. About a year or two later, I read an article about motherboard manufacturers who were using cheap capacitors that would leak after about one to one and a half years of usage (which was how long mine was in use). The article said that the capacitor manufacturers stole the formula for the chemical paste from a competitor and screwed up the recipe when they tried to duplicate it. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your board, but I'm pretty sure it's what happened to mine. Now I use a trusty ASUS motherboard and I haven't had a single problem with it yet ,knock on wood (I hope my particle board desk is close enought to count).

About a year and a half ago we had IBM and Compaq come in for recall service and replace about 150 motherboards that had these defective CAPS (the tops had a plus sign molded into the top) but since that issue arose the manufactures have been more intelligent about thier selection of components and i have seen any more since. Miles let me know if you will need me to resend you the Vulcan Carriers i did.
On a side note it looks like i may be back in service here in the next month or so altho in a more limited aspect than before.

I don't want ol' Stephen t come and move this thread to Engineering, but I had heard that it was Abit or Aopen that was nailed using the low quality caps. Now I hear Shuttle's name. I was about to warn folks to be wary of boards of any kind from not so much as these guys, as they've been caught, but from the other "midlevel name" companies. I guess if you go with really expensive top notch manufacturers like Asus or DFI or MSI, you don't have to worry about this... surprised about Gigabyte, though! :o

Nah, I wouldn't do that, as I give the Moddelers some slack. Besides, one issue was him loosing his ships (Man I hate to here that, hoppefully someone can get them back to you). I've always liked Asus, but I've Addored MSI boards. Then again, I'm also more a AMD fan then Pentium, but each there own.
Good luck though getting everything fixed FW. I wish I could help.

You might pay a buck or two more, but MSI is one of the more generous board makers. You get all the cables you need and all the extras that make connecting the computer's innards easy. I mean, they included a round cable!

When I first built my computer four years ago, I was still pretty new to computer parts and the companies that made them. I did my homework on motherboards before I picked one. I knew that Shuttle wasn't exactly one of the top names, but this particular board, AK 32, got really good reviews. The words "pleasantly surprised" showed up a lot. Also, it had slots for both SD RAM and DDR RAM. This was when DDR was still pretty new and people were still debating on whether or not it would catch on, so I wanted to play it safe and be able to use either type of RAM. I never did manage to get that board to register my processor's full speed. I have an AMD Athalon Thunderbird 1.4 GHz processor, but the boot screen always said that it was 1050 MHz (I don't remember if that was the exact number, but it was somewhere around 1 GHz).

Really? Did you try to match the FSB multipliers in BIOS? Barabbas, among others, I believe told me this and it worked.
-
I'm not sure, but I think I played around with the settings some, but to no avail.
-
the fun thing is, now that the board is dead, simply toss it on a bonfire transistor side up, stand back, watch the fireworks. VCR mainboards work well for that too, and really old tv's the the huge caps.

You are... an interesting fellow.

Miles sorry to here about the puter
I believe I may have a few of the vulcan fleet ship backed up here some where on cd
lemme know if ya need any of them

Checking your mobo periodically is always a good idea... I'd been meaning to check up on my old Epox board, as they have developed something of a rep for blowing capacitors, and sure enough, a couple were leaking... :-\
Hope you recover everything, FW...
