E, put some peanuts in the front yard, and usually the squirrels will stay out of the garden. It's worked for me.
And as an aside...keep your car doors locked..zuccinni will soon be ripe!!!!

See! I knew a party in Oklahoma just wasn't a party until somebody got out a gun and started shooting at the now-empty beer cans

What is this Empty you speak of?

That's what's left in a beer can after you cut your tongue lickin' out the last drop of foam..

You have to have lightening and thunder sounding in the background while you make your announcement. Evil laughter helps too.

What? No tomacco?

You are complaining about green tomatoes? Fry them babies up!! Wait on them to turn red. You Yankees don't know nothing. ;D
-
Yeah, yeah, farmboy... but they don't taste the same as vine ripened red!
Hey... all kidding aside, I had some Russian pickled tomatoes today! They were delicious! I have ask my Russian friend where he gets them. (I KNOW he DIDN'T pickle them himself!)
-
You do green tomatoes right, you'll never let one turn red again. I love tomatoes in all varieties, but fried...oh man. That stuff is great!! Want a recipe? Wash them suckers, slice them however thick you want them, mix in a bowl a cup of all purpose flour, salt and pepper to taste, and any other seasoning you like (we use steak seasoning, NOT meat tenderizer), dip each slice in an egg wash, then in the mixture, and fry them in a bit of oil until golden brown, flip, repeat, then eat them puppies up.
-
They are great with an Oklahoma 7-course meal (6 beers and a cheeseburger).. ;D
-
You get the right type of tomato (indeterminant) and there are many varieties that are indeterminant they will produce until the first heavy frost. the other plants produce one batch and are pretty much done for the year. There are afew varieties that come from russia. a blackish one and a transclucent whitish one as well as a few others. perhaps the russian friend had some of those.

Almost. Add one part cornmeal to two parts flour. Salt and pepper. Make a buttermilk and egg mixture. Dip sliced green tomatoes into mixture them dredge in meal/flour. (For an authentic taste, fry in a mixture of butter and lard. None of that margarine and veg. shortening. Thats for wimps) Fry on medium heat until golden brown.
Angel is right though. If you ever eat fried green tomatoes, cooked properly, you'll never let another tomato ripen on the vine. Its so good it'll make your tongue slap a hole through the top of your head! ;D

I'm sooooo jealous NJ! Tomatoes are one of the biggest cash crops in the U.S. right now. I know hydroponic farms here in S. Texas and in AZ are making a KILLING!
Very proud of your tomatoe patch my friend. MMMMMM, salads, BLTS, Italian sauces, salsas, so many uses for tomatoes. If I still drank I would say BLOODY MARYS! ;)

determinant means that once they have reproduced (made tomatos and seeds in them) they are genetically programmed to die. indeterminant means they do not die when they produce tomatos but keep on producing until something kills them. it is a standard term in gardening and knowledgeable nursery folks will know what you mean. Also most catalogs will list whether the plant is indeterminant or not in the description. you get far more bang for the buck and more tomatoes from indeterminant varieties. Further; they do not cost any more than most determinant varieties.

You can't pull one over on Storm when it comes to farming, he knows his stuff!

My plants in Austin were planted late, and the average high has been 100 for July (103 some days in July and Aug), so no tomatoes for me unless I buy! In Mexico the little cherry ones I planted in spring are producing like a mo/fo.

There are also cultivars of tomatoes that do not ever turn red they stay green and are bred specifically for frying.

Hey Jerry, did you ever join the arbor day Foundation? They have a good thing going on as an aside, The conservation Tree program. They will send you 5 Crypemyrtles for 10 bucks. The latest Magazine/Newsletter discusses how alot of trees helped a few Villages in India survive the flood waters there. apparently there conservation of Trees helped hold the flood waters back substantialy where more barren places got swamped.
