Mac OS X For Intel Hacked, Runs On Any PC (http://www.techweb.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=168601195)
Mac enthusiast sites reported Friday that Apple Computer's operating system for Intel-based computers, which is currently in the hands of developers, has both been leaked to the Internet and cracked so that it will run on non-Apple hardware.
In early June, Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs announced that starting in 2006, the company's Macintoshes will be equipped with Intel microprocessors rather than the current PowerPC chips produced by IBM.
Although Apple has been vague about whether other operating systems -- such as Microsoft's Windows -- will run on the new hardware (it has, however, said it will not sell or support other OSes), it was adamant about preventing its own Mac OS X from running on non-Apple computers.
That may be more difficult than Apple thought.
Several sites reported this week that crackers had managed to install the developer-issued version of Mac OS X for Intel on non-Apple machines, including Dell laptops. One site has posted video purportedly of Mac OS X booting on a non-Apple-approved Intel-based PC.
Another site, dubbed OSx86 Project and dedicated to the new OS from Apple, noted that OS X for Intel can be installed under VMware's virtual machine software, and that a disk image of the OS has been posted on several BitTorrent sites.
The crack supposedly bypasses Intel's Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip that was intended to prevent the operating system from running on non-Apple boxes. The digital rights management chip, which is supported in the new Mac OS's kernel, is Apple's attempt to tie the operating system to its own hardware; Mac OS X for Intel shouldn't install to PCs without the TPM chip.
Apple did not immediately return a call asking for comment.

LOL
Hello Steve Jobs welcome to the Intel/PC world, hope you enjoy your stay. Needless to say I'm not at all surprised to see this come about, actually it's a wonder it took this long. I am hoping that this will push Apple out of the PC hardware business and the Mac OS onto store shelves. I realize that I'm probably hoping for too much but... *shrugs*.

The Funny thing for me, Is I just got a PM yesterday from ClarkKent. He got a Dell laptop for school use. And He's always been a huge Mac fan.

I'm stilla mac fan. A huge mac fan. Don't care if OS X runs on a PC or not, to be honest, though when I manage to get an intel based mac I would like to run windows on a partition on it. I don't plan to use windows for anything but games, but still...
The dell? Didn't cost me a cent. It's not the machine I wanted, but I'm not about to turn down a $2500 laptop just because it's not a mac. Seriously, would you?

You know, you can buy a full install pack of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger for $125. A full install of Windows XP Pro costs $299. Why, you ask? Because Microsoft doesn't build machines, and Apple does. When you buy an Apple you get a pretty desktop machine or a laptop with very clean lines with a state-of-the-art OS thrown in with the deal. When you buy a Windows PC you're buying Windows XP and a box thrown together so the OS can run most of the time without giving you trouble.
If Apple decides to give up trying to keep its OS from the average Joe PC, they'll have to stop making their pretty machines or raise the price of the OS. I think it's fair to expect a 100% increase if they do that, and people will buy it too. I can't imagine a world without Apple's works of art they've been producing lately.

They may look nice but in terms of performance they SUCK. RISC holds many promises but also has many limitations as Motorola well know. I see all of this as last ditch attempts to save a struggling company that should have gone away with the Commodre for a long trip to no-where.
The Mac is supposed to be big in the production of movies and TV, All I ever here about is Final Cut Pro being the greatest editor ever and the PC must therefore be dead? WTF where do these freaks live? Anyone ever herd of Avid? They are the number 1 in video and multimedia editing and guess what Avid use PC's to do this on! Shock horror!!! Like all of those CGI effects seen in so many films? PC software and hardware make these too.
The Mac like the Spectrum is now only good for proping doors open and even then it probably is'nt as good as a PC would be for the job.
As for the Mac and Games..... Dont make me laugh.

I'm with you max. Hey the Mac isn't the perfect machine, but i can say that my little iBook does everythign and more that I would want, and it does it easier that the PC's I have.

Is that rebuttal or insult?
I believe the point of the post was to point out that a well thought out rebuttal picking apart his fallacious statements one by one is a waste of time. Had you made an argument against macs, I'm sure it would have been a more well thought out and insightful analysis instead of an inflammatory "your computer sucks, and I'm implying you're a fool for even mentioning it" diatribe.
Short answer, I believe it's more insult.
Skyflyer, we are all quite aware of your anti apple stance and that you hold more than a small amount of animosity and anger towards an inanimate object. Thank you for reminding us again. It's always fun to be ridiculed simply because we have differing preferences when it comes to computing.
Jebus, I thought I had left behind all this"macs suck," "nuh uh, PCs suck," 90's BS behind.
-
I thougrht this too, but as someone is still buying the machines it would appear not. I notice that although you disliked my tone your unable to disprove my statemetn regarding the production software. Sift through the "diatribe" and you will find the rebuttle. The reason behind the SUCKS comment is purley down to this argument having been steeled in the 90's with 90% of the worlds computer sales being PC based. If you think that OSX on the PC will change this by even 1% you are sadly mistaken I fear. Of the remaining 10% only 3% are attributed to the Mac. Mainframes, Unix and other specialised hardware make up the rest, even SGi manages more sales than Apple do and there hardware is very specialised.
In short the post was both and insult and a rebuttle, you just need to read the WHOLE post :)

Funny, and had you followd the thread you'd see my question as well as Clark's comment were directed at Max and not you.

Apple's not trying to gain more market share with their computers. If they were, Mac OS would be available on PC and I'd say at least 20% of Dell's machines would be shipped with OS X. Besides, I don't think it would help Apple's image if they were to grow just yet, since their machine reliability drops dramatically when they start getting popular and feel the pressure of demand.
As for the response to Kaos, it was kinda intended to be as much of an insult as what it was responding to. I didn't see anywhere that said *why* the Mac sucks so bad in your view, apart from the total lack of games which isn't Apple's fault at all. The only reason Windows owns 90% of the market is because of the licencing agreements with the various PC manufacturers don't allow them to ship machines with other OSes besides Windows, even if Apple licensed their OS. As such, game manufacturers don't make games for the 3%-10% market because it would be a waste of money, just as the selection of creative software is somewhat lacking on the Windows side of the fence. Apple is still in business because gamers buy PCs and artists buy Macs.
I bought a Mac because I wanted a machine that just works, that I didn't have to rip apart every so often, and that I didn't have to worry about the disk filling with viruses and malware. Say what you want about Mac owners, but I don't care. When Windows and the apps that run under Windows can run with the reliability of Mac OS and Apple's suite of software I'll consider coming back.
I've been a Mac fan since I first used them in the early 90's, and I've used both Mac and Windows just as long, so I think I can say that although Windows has come a long way in reliability, it's got a long way to go.

That pretty much sums up my mac experience: it just simply works. No viruses, no spyware, no Compaq 5000 that simply stops seeing its optical drives all of a sudden...
I could really care less what market share Apple has. they are a profitable company, they produce great machines and and it's an overal pleasurable computing experience. I know that there are some guys in here that make their windows boxes sing like Pavarotti, but most people I run into can barely keep their windows machines barely working. Still though, what I wouldn't give to know what all the PC experts in here know.
Hey, you don't like a mac? don't buy it. It's not like we care either way, we'd just like to not be ridiculed because we like our macs so much.
