Actually, I have released this before on the Fleet13 Docks, but I decided to re-release this on the Battleclinic site since that seems to be the main download hub now. You can get the ship here...

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Thats MUCH better than the ones I use. But I hate your engines. Do you plan to release a more pre TOS warps? These CL's were carried into the GW and had warp ability.
-
I'd like to see it with round nacelles as well. But it looks cool the way it is, very interesting design.
-
I've always liked his engine design. I think it is an innovative take on them. They look sublime with that slitted glow against the dark of space. I just don't like SFB designs all that much.
-
Hmmm the nacelles do look TMP'ish, I always thought SFB was set in the TOS era ? But I never played it, and am just going on what I've seen and heard. Great work on this model, I'm not keen on the design though. Like I said before I don't know alot about SFB but to me, it looks like a lack of imagination on the part of the games creators. Unless this was a cannon design as well ? O.K. I've confused myself again. Time to do some research..... ;)

MP,
The SFB Old Light Cruiser was a Romulan War era vessel that was refitted continously (much like the Warbird) for several decades. It was originally a Non-Tactical Warp ship that was armed with nuclear missiles and lasers... at that time (before even the SFB Early Years), it was the most powerful Federation vessel in existance. The ship was upgraded to Tactical Warp when it became available, and was then made into a myriad of varriants because of the prolific numbers and strong, simple design of the class. IT was eventually replaced by the NCL, but some barriants (like the Commando Cruiser) remained in service throughout the General War.
This would probably be a late General War refit of the CL, maybe one of the ECL escort varriants with engines like that (nasty little ship, even if I don't like Feds with ph-G's).
The design was never canon in any way, shape, form or fashion as far as Paramont is concerned.

Wow ...
I'm not that much of a SFB historian ... I got turned off due to .. (well lets not go down that road)
The nacelles are cool ... (trying to remember what really good modeler uses a similar design on CA design .. crap .. having a senior moment again)
At any rate ... looks good bud !

Ok, I suppose I better put an explaination in why this ship looks so much different then the standard SFB designs.
If anyone is a fan of my work, I like SFB, but I grew up as a kid when Star Trek II TWOK was out and loved the TMP era more then the TOS era. When I was about 12 to 13 years old, I bought SFB for the first time, but when I played I always imagined the ships in the game with a "TMP"ish design. I decided about 2 years ago to make SFB ships for SFC and wanted to make the designs have a more "TMP"ish look to them for those who don't like TOS designs. That is why the Engines look the way they do on this Old Light Crusier. Also, I have always considered the SFB Universe as a different Timeline or Paraell universe to the Star Trek one and this is also a reason why my designs are a bit different then the Standard Star Trek/SFB Cannon designs. I guess you could say this is my "Re-evisioned" look of what SFB looks like. ;D Below is the pics of the few other Fed ships I have already made at Battleclinic which can be downloaded...

As Carney had pointed out above, the SFB Light Crusier was heavily refited over the years as Technology advanced. I tried to reflect this into the design with Bulky Photon Torpedo Tubes, Large Phaser Banks (refited from older Phaser during the Early Era of SFB), and even using the old UFP insignia on top of the hull to reflect this being one of the first UFP designs built. I aslo wasnt to give ths ship a more "Modern" feel to her, yet I still wanted to keep the design similar to the Standard SFB we see a lot and even a hint of similarites to the ADB Ship counter silouetes. And most of all, as Carney had said, this ship was built during the First Fed/Romulan War so it was more of a War ship then an Explorer. Heck, I think the ship was even capable of landing on planets in SFB so I refelected this by giving the design a "smooth" look with some areodynamics to help do this (it even has landing gears on the bottom). And what you see now is basically the Standard Era/General War era Old Light Crusier. I was planning to make a Early Years version with less advanced engeins on it, just haven't gotten around to do it yet.

Yeah, it could land... but rue, dispair and agony on the F-CL that wanted to get -OFF PLANET again. It wasn't able to do that within a single engagment; the only one that ever really landed was the Commando Cruiser based on this design, and it only because it was able to disembark all its marines in some insane amount of time- like one turn IIRC.
-
Yeah, I thought I read somewhere in SFB that the Old CL could land on planets. I would definitly agree that it would be difficult to take off from a planet, this is a pretty big vessel mind you.
Right now, I'm working on the Fed Early Heavy Crusier which will have a more TOS look to it then my other designs. I want too make the Early Fed Frigate too, but I don't know what the SFB SSD design looks like. Never got the Early years module.

The EY frigate is identical to the General War fig... just not quite as 'substantial' inside, and with less engine power. The 'nontactical warp' frigate is identical to the Police Cutter... the same ship to a tee, done in the same shipyard. The design is just updated with better phasers and transporters.
-
What is the 'nontactical warp' frigate? I've never heard of that. Is it built the same time as the Old CL?

It's technical name is the 'Warp-Refitted Destroyer,' on page 4 of the Module Y SSD book. It was the 'destroyer' counterpart of the Old CL. It had a single photon and 3 ph-2's and it's shields were a mighty 9/7/7/5/5/5! I am a DESTROYER, hear me mewl. ::)
I just couldn't remember what it was called, so I called it a frigate. Sorry for any confusion it might have caused.

Ok, so let me get this straight, there is both an Early Fed Friagete and Fed Destroyer in the Early Years period?? I think I better try and invest in getting Module Y because it sounds like there are quite a few ships in that module I don't know about.
-
To all SFC players that wonder why the Old Light Cruiser looks like it does... notice the fact that the first time the F-CL is listed below is not when it is first constructed. It is when the ship is first REFITTED. The F-CL hulls have been in service since Year 50... almost a century by the time of SFC.

Warp Refitted Cruiser (first refit of the F-CL(old))
Warp Refitted Destroyer (later used as the F-POL)
Rigelian Early Destroyer
Rigelian Early Cruiser
Vulcan Early Destroyer

Wow! I had no idea there where some many Fed ships during the Early Years period. I think I better invest in getting that Module. 8)
