A friend on another forum is looking for music down loading software. she asked specifically for information on lime wire. can soem one give me a run down on limewire and perhaps suggest alternatives?

#1) All P2P software is bad, you are virtually guaranteed to receive viruses or trojans and become a hacking target.
#2) Most of it contains spyware. (don't think limewire does.)
#3) Factory CDs sound wayyyy better than mp3s.
#4) Commercial DVDs and VHS tapes look and sound wayyy better than DivX

Its open source so is somewhat trustworthy as its code can be examined for malicious stuff. (you can still download nasties with it though of course)

Finally; there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Advice from a mistaken user of it... RUN AWAY, DON'T GO NEAR IT.
My wife installed Limewire whilst trying to find a taped copy of an Alias episode, she's a rabid fan. Thankfully I got there just as she was about start downloading the matches for "Alias" "Episode" .... matches like "Alias..Episode.. MMMMMF.. Hardcore.. ". Nothing but porn. Porn. And more porn.
After deleting the program I ran AVG and Ad-Aware and got plenty of hits.

I never had Lime Wire work very well for me - Scour, Kazaa lite, and Bear Share always ran much much better for me - but I don't know why anyone would use anything besides Bit Torrent these days.
Its like the difference between Vhs and Dvd to me - they'll both do it but its hard to go back to the old school way once u get a taste of the new.
Also I like using search engines like isohunt.com for the torrent seeds (the file u r looking for) becuase you don't end up finding a million porn listings.
It has a slight learning curve but its probably worth it for your friend to invest the time if he wants to find music or TV shows and such.
As always please note that copyright laws apply - although enforcement is spotty at best.
