getting the fire wall message when trying to log into the d2

This means your XP firewall is up.  either turn it off completely(recommended by people who know) or failing that:

try launching the game from desktop, then after it is up go to desktop.  you should find a box on your screen asking you if you want to allow others to connect to you while you are playing that game.  tell it yes.  this will at least put a hole in the firewall for that game.
