From Trek Core (http://gaming.trekcore.com/tacticalassault/)
I may just have to invest in a Nintendo DS.

Wow! I agree, I'm not much into console games but this might make me actually want to buy a PSP. :o Also, it sayst that Quicksilver is the Developer, and if I recall, SFC1 had them as there developer too. This might be a good sign.
From what they have said on that site and the single screenshot, it looks very similar to SFC! :o

You can find the producer for the game and new information on the STGU forums.

We'll also have the Tactical Assault section of the Games Wiki loaded with info soon.

The DS version looks best. It looks almost EXACTLY like SFC1 in graphics, except blockier textures (the DS lacks texture filtering). But the awesome part is the DS's touch screen. There are SFC-esque buttons for Navigation, Shields, Weapons, Phasers, Torpedoes, and Special menus...the Shield menu is shown, looks like you can overload. The text mentions Federation, Klingons, Orion, and Gorn ships in both versions, and mentions that the DS has the exclusive ability to use the screen as a command console and push buttons and sliders to do things like "redirecting power to shields and firing photon torpedoes".
SFC with a joystick and buttons? No thanks. SFC with a touch screen and buttons? Oh yeah. I am definitely buying the DS version if it is close to SFC.
