No, no, no. Turn them on. Come on, folks. This is common knowledge. You've got to keep those firewalls on. On, I say!!!

Not funny Lepton. >:( Firewalls must be off entirely for playing on the Dynaverse. It is different from other games, not only do you need to be able to connect to the server but you need to be able to connect to every other player logged into the server independently of the server. Software firewalls add a layer to your tcp/ip stack, another layer of NAT and lag to add to your connection.

I've only been able to figure out how to connect thru my router (DI-604) by using DMZ, and there's no way I'm gonna connect without my McAfee firewall running- otherwise I get gangbanged like 10 times a minute from units trying to access ports. If someone could give me an alternative using the router firewal, I'd be grateful as anything rarely gets through that...

If you get hit that often, it sounds like your ISP is simply "pinging" your modem. ISPs do that...especially Cable or DSL. It's their way of making sure the modem is working and you're not stealing something you're not paying for. It's really quite harmless, those pings... ;)

I do get the very odd ping, but no- this comes in from EVERYWHERE, especially after running Bitcomet, though I found a way to cut that down by running though a higher numbered port

NEVER TURN OFF FIREWALLS, SW or otherwise, ever. I have had port attacks that will knock me off the server.
you can set your sw firewalls to allow you to play on the server. you just have to know how to.
This is no joke, people. and I am not joking.

You might also try a firewall that runs differently. I use Tiny Personal Firewall and it works by monitoring and blocking the execution of individual .exes and processes. If a program tries to execute on your computer and it's not on a "trusted" list, you get a popup window asking what to do with the process. If the exe/process is on a "trusted" list, TPF lets it run without interference -- this includes access to ports, both talking and listening.
I've only played SFC online a couple times, but when I did I had TPF running in its normal settings, and once I told the program that SFC's exe was allowed internet access, everything ran smoothly.

Then just make sure u play solo somewhere way off on the map by yourself. Dont try drafting me... I dont like crashing to desktop and getting countdowns to forfeits.

I thought it was pretty funny. :P

I've always used my firewall in D2- only had the very odd problem, most times it's player specific

Sigh... what is wrong with the original? i.e. The only one you can trust: http://www.bittorrent.com/
Most pings are looking for security holes that probably do not exist if your system is up to date and if you do not run a lot of boneheaded P2P programs. Use firefox and stay off the porn and warez sites and you'll be just fine.

I hereby resolve to harden the D2 firewall detector server. >:(

I doubted Bonk to at first, but since I started disabling the Norton firewall when I play my drafting has gotten better and I've gotten ZERO viruses or spyware.
-
DH, I have drafted people just fine since I am still on dialup. just as long I am doing the drafting.
And to top that off I am on my desktop syst and NOT on my laptop. go figure. ;D
