Title: Too Many Darned Mods...anyone having this problem?
Post by: _Rondo_GE The OutLaw on March 02, 2006, 01:35:47 pm
I dont know if people have had this problem yet or at all but this last week has been hell with SFC OP.  I guess I loaded one mod too many and the system just went bonkers...(No pun intended Bonk)

And I luv most of em but man I think I loaded one mod too many to this program and totally screwed it up...permenantly.

Yup.  I uninstalled SFC OP and reinstalled it and the problem still persisted (black screen, space borders no in the center of the tactical review (on the left side), game crashing...

I won't bother saying which mod it was but it doesn't matter (no it wasn't Bonk's mod...lol).  Also beware of uninstalling the program because the uninstaller leaves a whole mess of SFC on the system...I'm not sure thats working right anymore.  After you uninstall and get it out of the registry you need to completely slick the SFC Taldren directory...for good messure you should unload each and every program associated with SFC OP or SFC from your system (first) like The Magnum Man's COOP Ace and even EZNI (probably no needed but just to make sure) and anything else that ineracts with SFC OP.

So far the complete "Virgin" reinstal has worked.

I have also been informed by some folks about using a multiple install of SFC OP.  I think in the future thats the way I'm going to go.

No such thing as too many mods.  ;D

Glad things worked out though Rondo.

Don't actually make multiple installs, that will confuse mod installers mightily.

Instead, just take snapshots of yout OP install as outlined by t00l here: http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163365074.0.html

Kind of like so:

That's usually what I mean when I say "multiple installs". Copy/paste/rename your OP folder.

Been doing it since SS2, never had a problem.

Current folders:

3.4
4.0
AOTK2
GW5
KCW
mm (?)
SGO5
4.0 hardcore
stock

They all work.

I have found the multiple folder technique to be the most effective and efficiant method IMVHO. Brute force but effective kinda like an enveloping R vs a Federation Police frigate.

Well thanks everyone for your help.  I really appreciate it.  And I'm glad to see a few familiar names taking notice.  Especial thanks to Bonk for that picture...worth a thousand words.

As the game ages and ages more and more quality mods come out.  You want to play them but after a while you get a spider web thats hard to manage.

It's not the mods.  It's just that over time you load so many mods you start to forget what is what and what to do and pretty soon everything gets hosed up.  Some of the batch files help and have gotten me out of trouble but when new content comes out the batch files don't always work unless they too are updated.  So I guess you can blame the user but not everyone who wants to play this game is a computer jock or has time to tinker with their box.

So I think this solution will work for me.  I dont see how it can miss.  In another month or so I'll be getting a new box (had my system for 4 years its about time).  Gonna be dual core with a nice big hard drive so this kind of solution shouldnt be a problem.

I was scared he was asking about me, and my fellow Mods. Not the SFC mods. Close call for me.
