Title: AT&T Tries to Move Into Providing High Speed Internet Service
Post by: TheJudge on March 10, 2006, 09:32:09 pm
So, has anyone here heard anything about efforts from AT&T to move into the market for providing High Speed Internet?  It's supposed to blast open the doors to providing more competition for cable companies/dsl providers...

I'm asking because I need to brush up on the issue over the weekend...my firm just got hired by AT&T and I'm going to be coordinating a lot of our work...

Being as AT&T is now owned by SBC-Yahoo, but they are going to do Business under the brand of AT&T, I'd wager they're already in the broadband business.

AT&T already took over my long distance and DSL from SWB. I do not think they have a legal right as I chose no long distance carrier, I use prepaid phone cards, 10 bucks buys me almost 3 hours to Latin America, without those stupid fees and taxes. Our phone companies really are greedy bastiches, IMO.

AT&T IS SBC.. SBC owns them, but more people know who AT&T is so they decided to keep the brand.

I have to question if AT&T can compete in a Megabit speed war with the likes of Comcast.  I just don't think that AT&T can offer the kind of speed that cable companies can without some serious upgrades.  So I think that pushes AT&T into the value market and away from a lot of the speed craved gamers out there.  So no I don't IMHO think there will be direct competition as AT&T can't reach the data speed it needs to directly compete with cable companies which is what allows the cable companies to charge higher rates.

Seeing as AT&T sold their broadband business to Comcast, it's a little ironic that they now want to get back into the business and compete with Comcast.

AT&T is now using the SBC Backbone, which is really the leased WilTel (now Level 3, used to be Williams Communications) backbone, which is the largest next generation fiber network in North America.  These were the people that discovered shooting fiber down abandoned gas lines.
