Title: Why no Homeworld model conversions?
Post by: intermech on March 22, 2006, 01:19:39 pm
Why have we not seen any Homeworld models converted to SFC?

I had heard at one point it was a license issue, but according to this article, the source code had been released:

The source code did not include the models...  (nor, if I may editorialize for a moment, did it include most of what was needed to actually use it in any meaningful way :( )...  so whatever point is being made here is moot...

(This assumes that the point refers to the original models from Homeworld, not models from any Homeworld mods, which are of course protected by their own IP minefields...  ;) )

i got a crazy idea, if we cant get the ok for the models themselves, why not make them and remake the textures, you know kinda like a community project anyone who can help out can and one person slaps it all together

I smell another MOD here lol

My advice is to tread carefully here. I was lucky enough to get in contact with the head of Sierra games as I wanted to port the HW2 stuff to BC. He stated that it wasn't strictly legal due to the use of different 3d engines licenced by different publishers. He did allow me in my case but on special dispensation to do so.

Granted, HW & HW2 is getting on a bit now so I cant see much of a comeback, but watch yourself!
