In the last week of August, 1987, my company set out on the last mission we had at AIT. We'd had an FTX in the field, and acquitted ourselves well.  But the last task remained. So, at 3 AM in the morning, we loaded up our gear, put on our rucksacks, 'port of arms' our weapons, and started marching. 27 miles later, we made it back to the barracks at just before 9 AM.

Waiting for us was a Staff Sergeant with the most beautiful thing, outside of a babe in a bikini, I'd ever seen: the light blue cord of the US Army Infantry. When the Captain handed one to me and shook my hand, I was about ready to fall over in exhaustion, but I grabbed that cord like my life depended on it.

Congratulations on achieving something your body at every chance says, "You can't do it!", because just when you think you've completely run out of gas, there's always a little left in the tank.

This from a fat cityboy: watch your knees.  When I was a tad older than you, I used to do two or three miles.  Then there was a time I felt extra good and I did six a few times.  I think it helped to screw up my knees, in conjunction with all that running on concrete.  I ignored warning signs like intense and extenede knee pain.

I have no pain now, as all I do is walk or ride a bike, but I'll bet if I went and bought a pair of running shoes (my old ones have been dust for ages), I'd be in so much pain I won't be able to walk.

But then again, you're an in-shape flyboy; I'm an old fat dude.

I've never cared for running (jogging) or walking for exercise. Which is why I enjoy my Raleigh ten speed. One goes farther, faster, and still gets the cardiovascular benefits.

Hey Fed, don't get all upset, but nowadays I do the same, but on a 10 speed... Peugeot.

I used to lift freeweights for 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, and I could run 10 miles without thinking much about it.  Then one day I had the epiphany that my body's job is mostly just to get my head from place to place.   ;D

Now, if you want to see me run you'd better have something to chase me.  :P
