Title: Windows messneger help
Post by: Storvick_XC on May 13, 2006, 11:12:18 pm
I had to reformat my hardrive and reload windows. now Windows messenger keeps poping up security alerts about the registry being messed up. How can I get that to stop? when I run a scan There are no problems showing up.

1) Do you mean the Windows Messenger Service or do you mean the MSN Messenger IM application?

2) How are you scanning the registry?

3) Registry cleaners are evil and completely unnecessay.

Most likely when you reinstalled the OS the Windows Messaging Service turned back on and you have some piece of crapware trying to get you to install it.

Go to control panel, admin tools, services, then stop the messenger service and also change it to manual, so it doesn't restart on reboot.

I would suggest changing it to disabled. The messaging service is only need in a network with a server. It is of no use on a stand alone computer and is of limited use on a small workgroup.

It's lying.  If you have re-installed with XP, you need to get the latest updates, patches & fixes and SP2 in particular will disable the Windows Messenger Service and stop the lying bastyrds from SPAMMING you with this crap.

If you re-installed with Windows 2000, you do need to get all the latest updates, patches and fixes, but as others have suggested you also need to dis-able the Windows Messneger Service manually from the Control Panel --> Computer Mangement --> Services, double-click on Messenger and change the 'startup type' to "Disabled".  The reboot.
