Title: Transparent textures applied as damage.
Post by: intermech on August 02, 2006, 06:57:49 am
Here is something I was experimenting with on my Triumph class. I used transparency to give a more shredded appearance to a damaged ship instead of only deleting polygons.

I know this is probab;y a dumb question but can we apply this technique to SFC 2 ?

Unfortunately  no.  :(  SFC3 was the first of the series to allow *.tga files as textures. Now, there may be another format that SFC 2 does accept and also can be used for transparency, however I am not aware of any.

Does it need to be TGA format in order for it to work ?

Well, I am not sure, I use TGA to do it, however, I know there are other alpha map capable formats out there, dds for example, and I think pcx even has that capability. I use TGA because I have a tga editor/converter. You ought to try out the other ones.

SFC3 can use TGA textures?  This is the first I've heard of it.

seem cool, but could use some burn mark on the hull, cause its look like the ship is still ben build and escape from a dry dock  ;D

Those shots are merely an exploration of the available texturing technology. I am sure that in the hands of a true artist, they can look much better.

Looks like a year of hell triumph.  I really hope someone can find a way to do this in SFC2.

Which brought down several levels by it in ability to not over smooth everything...

Interstellar Machine, I am very glad you posted this, it is very cool.  But I forgot something I'd wanted to ask.

Did this all happen at once?  Or did the damage build over time and consecutive hits?

What I'm trying to ask...I mean I'd just like to ask, out of curiosity...

What...the hell...HAPPENED?![/b]

::ALCHEMIC EDIT::
I just read something in the Planets! thread that may help.

another way of creating transparency is inverted Polies that might work for SFC2

Unfortunately, this is how the ship entered the skirmish. If you use transparent damage textures as the damage that increases as the ship is hit. The transparent part simply just does not show. Therefore showing less damage then a normal damage texture. However, I  don't know, there may be additional file types out there that could be used in this way as damage textures.

I was going for that "Year of Hell" look. I have been thinking of using this in a mod centered on a rogue Starfleet Captain bent of freeing his cousins deep in Klingon territory where they still hold human slaves.

8) That looks sweet. If a way could be found to make the damage build over time, it would be a huge step up in setting "the mood" (I guess) of a battle.

Unfortunately the pics have gone away over time and now are blank.  Thus I don't have any idea what the damage looks like.
