Quick question- was playing online tonight, right in the middle of setting up a game my system shut itself
down. Turning it back on-I have no sound.
Could this be a simple (ie easy to fix problem) or is it more likely my card is on fire even as we speak?

Check your sound settings in control panel and device manager to see if it got muted somehow. Since you were installing a program when it happened I'm thinking that some setting got hosed somewhere.

Check your program to see if it has any sound settings. Sometimes it will say something like "Primary sound card", that's just a generic entry. Use the drop down list to change it to whatever your sound card is.

The other thing is to unplug and re-seat all of the audio and speaker cables. When mine acts up it's generally because a dog has walked under my desk and snagged a wire with his foot or something.

if those don't work i would also advise reinstalling the drivers as they could have become corrupt
