Downey Is Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr. has been cast as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's Iron Man movie for Marvel Studios, Variety reported.
The movie, based on the classic Marvel Comics character, is set for release by Paramount in May 2008. It will be the first to be self-financed by Marvel.
Downey will play Stark, a wealthy industrialist who invents a high-tech suit of body armor that gives him superpowers when he is kidnapped.
In the comics, Stark was an alcoholic, a trait that will undoubtedly draw public comparisons with Downey's own struggles with substance abuse, the trade paper reported. But Marvel production president Kevin Feige told the trade paper that the first Iron Man movie won't deal with Stark's alcohol problems, though it would likely come up in potential sequels.
The first film will deal with Stark's invention of the Iron Man suit and his conflicted past as a weapons inventor. Principal photography on "Iron Man" is set to begin in February.

Iron Man has been one of my favorite comic characters. Like Spiderman he is less than perfect, more human superheroes. I'm not much on Robert Downey though, hopefully the don't screw this up. Spiderman seems to be the only decent comic-to-movie franchise out there.

I too have been looking forward to theis one- I've wanted an Iron Man movie since childhood. RDJr wasn't my first choice for this role, but maybe his on unfortunate problems will give him insight into the unique problems that Tony Stark had, and thus improve him in the role.
Here's hoping.

Yea, I'm hoping. It would be nice to see and they can do the scenes with him flying around in the suit now too.
Oh, and the X-men movies are pretty good, haven't seen the last one yet though.

Oh, and the X-men movies are pretty good, haven't seen the last one yet though.
The first two were good. (I especially liked the first one). I really think you can give the third one a pass and be just as happy that you didn't see it.
The story idea is good, unfortunately it suffers from a last-minute script, a last-minute director, and tons of money spent on the wrong things. The pacing feels extremely rushed. The dialogue is bad. The scenes are a bunch of set pieces that don't flow from one to another. The art direction is bad, making the characters in their costume look silly standing around in the middle of the street. (The previous two movies didn't have that problem, even with the same characters and costumes.) Then the movie tops it off by spending a *ton* of money building a full-scale replica of the Golden Gate bridge the director was really proud of, but which was completely unnecessary. (The satellite shot of Magneto moving the bridge could have been done with CGI, and after that it was just a backdrop. The (very poorly done) battle scene didn't even take place on the bridge.
The bridge scene was a symptom of too much money and not enough time to do real things with that money. Heck, Magneto could have just flown every one over and they could used that money on better scenes; if they had time and a writer to properly develop them.

PS: Oh yes, on the topic! ;D I'll go see the Iron Man movie. Robert Downy has problems, but he can turn in good acting performances.
Although I must admit, my favorite Robert Downey scene is from the Simpsons. The family is taking a tour of Hollywood, and Bart points to RD leaning out a second story window with a gun and shouts, "Look! They're filming a movie! Roberet Downy Jr. is shotting it out with police!"
Marge looks around confused and says, "I can't see any cameras."

I hope RDjr can do the role justice. I heard that he dropped 15 (maybe they said 50, not sure since I haven't seen him ) pounds to play him....

He's a great actor, in my opinion, one of the best. I'm nost sure I see him as Tony Stark, but I think he would do a better job than DeCaprio, who I heard was attached to a Iron Man film at one point. I just hope it turns out to be a good film and not something like Daredevil or some of the duds. If it's on par with Spidey, the first X-men movies, or even the latest Superman, or Batman, I'd be pleasantly surprised. Afterall, Iron Man isn't one of the "top tier" superheroes. Sure people know about him, but he's not quite the icon that Superman, Batman, Spidey, or even the Hulk are, so there may be a little more temptation to let people change stuff too much and take things off in a bizarre direction, or just not put much effort into it at all and cash in on the comic fans who are willing to go see anything when it comes out.

Downey can definitely play the role.
It's all about how they can do the armour and special effects.
