Here is a freeware game that will take *.x files. I had some fun messing with it last night:

Ok, yeah it is StarWars, but I think that could be easily changed.

X is the file type used in DirectX 3d geometry.

X files are exportable in MilkShape. Look for direct X 8 File format in the exporter menu.

Also, I found this great mod for the game, it shows that you can use textured models. The guy converted the game to a Star Trek Dominion Wars senario:

played this one awhile ago its a good shoot them up with starwar or startrek very easy to change the ships out
as its x format

I don't model SFC III I never liked the game  :P. Other OutaLance members do SFC III versions of my ships if they want them in game.
