Title: Linking 2 computers?
Post by: Hexx on January 11, 2007, 04:41:42 pm
Hey all, have a question. (errhm..obviously)

Sister has a (very old) laptop- about 160ish megs and Win 98 on it- not 98SE, just Win98
She wants to be able to copy some stuff off of it- I can't find any drivers online for any of the flash drives we have that support Win98 (the 98SE drivers don't seem to work)

Is there any way I can actually link her laptop to a regular desktop computer?

Any way that's relatively easy?

Thanks for any ideas or info

Does that laptop have a LAN port? If so, get something called a crossover cable, it is a special LAN cable and do a simple, direct LAN connection to the desktop.

LAN would be easiest but if that's not available they can be connected through the serial ports using a null modem and Window's HyperTerminal software.

Thanks guys

Her notebook doesn't have a LAN port (stupid thing) but I think (?) I can get one that plugs into the USB slot.
(of course whether that will work sans drivers I dunno)

If not I'll try the serial port connection.

I may be back..  ;D

Worse comes to worse you could also just pull the hard drive and connect it to your system.  Then just copy the files over.

I recently bought one for my sister and it came with drivers for Win98 (SE or not I'm not sure) so they do exist.  Make sure it can use the older USB v1.0 or 1.1 as Win 98 support for USB 2.0 is "iffy".

Why not just get a USB flash drive?

Why not just get a USB flash drive?

They don't really work with 98 systems if memory serves.  Because flash drives are recognized by Windows as an external hard drive, older systems might actually want the drivers to run the hardware, but I could be wrong about this one.
