Title: Doomsday Machine: REMASTERED
Post by: Darkseid on February 10, 2007, 08:16:49 pm
This is my favorite episode of TOS period, and seeing it remastered is going to be sweet.  But it got me thinking.  All the planet killers made for SFC have been based on the original, but how about a Remastered Planet Killer?  It looks much more deadly than the original and would be sweet to see in game.

Excellent, look forward to playing with the new Doomsday Device! Thank you for sharing it and I always enjoy new versions of some old things!

Actually this was meant to be a request, those are shots from the actual episode.  I'm sure I could re texture an older model of the Planet Killer if I had one.  But a new higher poly model with high resolution textures would be more entertaining.

Aww..

They cut out:

Decker:  "You're Bluffing."
Spock: "Vulcans Never Bluff."
Decker: "No, I don't suppose that they do..."

Yeah they edit it for syndication.  They'll be out on DVD though so that's good.  Unfortunately for me, they show them off by a week here.  So while the rest of the world is watching the Doomsday Machine, I'm stuck still waiting for "Journey to Babel".  I wont get to see DM until next weekend.

Hey FW that isn't half bad. In fact I like that better than the original model texture.

 ;D

Every generation alters and retells the stories that were given to them. The Doomsday Machine Episode is no different IMHO and if I had to choose one episode from TOS to remaster this would be my choice too.

As I recall as long as Spacecadetglowuk is credited it can be released. That also goes for Atheorhaven, unless he's recently changed his policy; he originally rescaled this anyway.

Speaking of Doomsday Machine's in SFC... Tracey G had a really good TDM based mission that was multi-empire playable somewhere on the Script forum.

IMHO... the Doomsday Machine missions should only be playable in nebula hexes as any other space terrain allows the planet killer to be wiped out by anything the size of a fighter or a shuttle... Maybe Nuclear Wessels will convert the SFC1 campaign to SFC: OP.

Naturally, I don't have SFC:OP installed... If you check the Readme I bet Spacecadetglowuk states he's okay with reworking his model so long as he is properly credited. I have not been able to reach spacecadetglowuk by e-mail for a LONG time. Probably just before you released the rescaled Planet-killer Atheorhaven. +1 Karma to you.

Just a suggestion, but I wouldn't mind seeing an extra version done. The Model from "In Harms Way", the Dooms Day Machine from New Voyages...

Now that LOOKS mean, like it's thinking about killing you!

In the meantime Darkseid, you could post the new skins as pics here or upload the "replacement skins" for Spacecadetglowuk's model at Battleclinic.

I'll have to download the old one so I can play with it's textures for a bit.  Shouldn't be too hard on Dial up, the model can't be that big...

EDIT: OK I downloaded the model and came up with this so far.  I'm having trouble creating the new Nuclear Core of the Maw but it actually looks pretty good like this.  Although it wouldn't really be a remastered version.  More like an Old/New Hybrid.

That should work, it's much better than the ones I was making lol.

How does this look?  I darkened your texture a bit to make it more hellish looking.  Or at least that was what I was going for.  Suggestions are welcome.

EDIT: OK I just changed the exterior skin... does this look better than my first attempt?  I personally think so lol.

Hey, this looks great.

But, I must ask, how many polys?

This is just a re texture of atheorhaven's model already posted on Battleclinic.  His original textures were based on the original and looks great, but we're upgrading it to the remasted episode.

That's cool. Too bad you can't animate the "Maw" though...  :(

you can, just use an opposing lightmap under the maws texture nothing too fancy maybe more red or something that is differnet to the original texture. its not great animation but it does give the appearance of movement within the area

God work guys!

Wait until you see this in game. The Maw animation effect will still be yellow despite the upgraded textures. The Yellow Maw effect TEXTURE in the texture files will also need to be retextured to make this in game effect to more closely match the remastered version shown here.

(Guessing because I haven't seen it yet).. I'm guessing that the new background of the maw should be reddish, with the maw effect providing the majority of the yellow animation.

And in the \assets\texture maw texture, that should also be tweaked.. if I understand KF correctly.  :D

;D Yes Atheorhaven, you are 100% correct.

Darkseid, where is the d/l for your second version posted above?
