I just seen the gold pack (Original and expansion for $30) at a Gamestop. Being an old MoO 1&2 player, is it worth getting?
-
I have GalCiv II but not the expansion. It seems good but I really haven't been able to spend the time to get into it.
-
I just picked up the Gold pack with the Dark Avatars expansion. I'm not really sure that I'll get the time to play it but if I do I'll let you know my impression.
-
Alien just got me the gold pack for my time in DG.
I'll load it up tonight.
Any updates that I'm going to have to install before playing?
-
There is one update from release, don't think it's too big.
I've been playing DA since Beta, and the amount they put in on top of the beta is amazing.... GC2 and now DA are installed on both of my machines as a constant.
You can always rely on it for fun...
Oh, and stop by the modding forums for the Planetary graphics enhancement pack, and weapon upgrade mod by the guys at I-mod productions ;D

So far I have only seen one feature I am still waiting for. I am pleased with the game so far.
Different races having different preferred world types. If I like high gravity arid worlds a natural ally would like low gravity ocean worlds. The only game I've seen so far that does this is the old Spaceward Ho! where everyone had a different idea of what 1g and 72oF meant.

When playing long sessions I suggest stopping periodically and defraging the HD. I was playing a long game last night and eventually things locked up and I couldn't exit the game (my computer is normally very stable) and when I rebooted I did a defrag (I did the last one several days ago) the C: (especially the C:) and G: drives (installed to G:) were very fragmented. I started getting video issues with the small map in the lower right before this happened then the entire top half of the screen went black. I haven't tried reloading the saved game yet (autosaved just prior to the final crash) so I don't know if I can continue the game or not.
I also ran into some of the "ancient artifacts", one of the weaker computer players found one that turned all planets within a set radius that were not colonized into class 9 habitable by anyone. Fortunately they did so on the edge of the cluster of stars that was my home territory and I had 2/3 uninhabitable planets there and only 3 were inhabited by the lesser empire. I managed to grab all but 3 of the newly terraformed worlds :) and they have since defected to me as have the other 3 of the lesser empire. I was already #1 in everything except population.

The mega events are always pretty good, though some of them are challenging at best.
I always get concerned when the dread lords or the pirates show up, then your game goes crazy.... at some points it can literally mean an end to galactic civilisation because nobody can build ships withought them being wiped out.
It becomes a race to see who can research the best weapons and defense tech, to take them all on... before all your worlds are invaded. Very tense.
-
I read online of a system to handle the pirates.
Step 1/ make fast transports with long range sensors
Step 2/ use those transports to invade the AI operated worlds as they will have used all their ships to fight the pirates.
Alternate is put everything on research - no military construction at all and just reach a point where you can build individual ships that are more powerful than multiple fleets of pirate ships.
They appear to have a patch out already that tones down the pirates among other things.

How does this game compare to the MOO series?

How does this game compare to the MOO series?
the first two, Enjoyment wise, Pretty damn good. about the same actually.
The third, well, It blows it out of the water, then again, pacman or even ET on the 2600 blew MOO3 out of the water.
It's a good game Hexx. I have the first one, not the gold, and I love it.I think there's another thread on strategy here, just do a search bro.

So far gameplay is far superior to MOO and so far I am very impressed with the game "out of the box" so to speak. I am just playing a random universe with the settings that came with. Later I with begin with the tweaking. By the way, once you actually register the game at www.galciv.com you have access to all sorts of stuff that otherwise you would not.
I picked up the game at Target for just over 10.00 USD by the way. I still want to know about the Trek universe mod becuase I have downloaded but not installed a few of the B5 mod available.

I just started to play the game and really enjoying it.
Being an old MoO player, I find it refreshing that this program actually takes advantage of my technology.
I like the idea that the AI uses a seperate string on my dual core. The other empires do play more intelligently than some of the other games I played before.
Sofar an extremly satisfying galactic dom turn-based game.
Well worth the HD space (No need for the game disk) compared to ST Legacy.

I've been taking ships out of the trek mod and adding specular and bump/normal maps.
They look fantastic in the game engine.... I've been trying to import some of Mackies ships, but no success...... i can't use 3d modelling progs.
IF anyone would like to have a go..... I would worship you, by using any ships they made. ;D

I'll check thier forums and see what they got. If it's something I can do and tell you how to do it, I'll let you know.
