So, thats her... first contribution before i add the the mapping and textures, for those that dont know, time depending, were talking a few days at best ;)..
I saw a TOS defiant on the web, i thought it looked awsome as a model, but not realistic, so i decided to faten up the idea, fat belly old tech etc, and then go with the flow... and i ended up with this after a few sketches... so then i modelled it.. ;)
Please feel free to comment, i love criticism and praise in all forms and can take both ;)
-
The TOS Defiant that you may have seen may have been Hollis J Woods mesh with my beginners textures. :)
It's one that I revisit from time to time as my skills get better... and I should get back to it soon.
But I like what you'd done with the idea.. it's looking sharp. :D
-
Good start!
About it taking a few days time dependant, shhh... keep that quiet we have everyone believing this stuff takes months to do. It keeps them from bothering us
I wish I had enough time for things to take days instead of the 30 minutes here or there I do get
-
Thanks for the input guys, and the information you have provided.
Im going to modify the Oblivion, in areas such as the lower hull and make it one rounded belly, also the necelle area needs to be rounded more to occomodate the circular buzzrad, and the nose needs to be removed and rebuilt i think, more tos style.. ;D
-
Thanks, the only change to the seconday hull will be to round off the deflector area, I dont like the angular look... feels somewhat . . lazy? lol
working on it now.. :)
-
The nacelles don't look TOS but it's an interesting design :)
-
Nice work man.
Now, only to take care of the smoothing on the lower side of the sec hull. Oh, and is the impulse drive structure booleaned into the rest of the mesh?
-
cool designe, but i don't like the part that stick of the ship where the bridge is, or it should be biger, but still a good designe
-
Thanks fellas... yeah, I have been playing with the mesh for the past day, in the end, I started again.. its much closer to the origianl design now, so i know 99% of you will like.. show a wip shortly ;)
-
Obviously haven't seen the new one, but I'd change the dimensions of the dish a bit. I wouldn't go beyond 2:1 on the WxH ratio. Maybe add some mini-dishes to either side (like on a strike carrier) if you need to fill in the space.
I like the way you've done the nacelles. Kick the smoothing angle down a bit though, as Adonis suggested.
-

Starting the textures now....
-
Thanks for the input Rod... I have taken the advice adonis gave on board for the rebuild, now smooth as a babys butt... took a while to learn what he mean tho by smoothing lol..
And you are definately right in what you said about the dish.. it was a little big.. :(
But I have thrown that away now and am plodding along with my new one ;)
-
Good. I'm glad you figured it out, since I said it backwards. :D Placement and size of the dish is much nicer on this one.
-
Don't abandon the old design! Personally I am not one for the retconned Defiant thing... Defiant is 2370s not 2260s! Your old one was far more fitting I think, although theres nothing wrong with a TOS Defiant for a bit of fun. Bring back the olden too :-\
-
Thanks fellas, i may yet still work on the original design, but i am liking this "Hollis J Woods " design, and i dont think it has been done for ingame use for BC or SFC, please correct me if im wrong.
After speaking to fallen warrior and adonis on MSN (Before it cut out) we had a decision made on texturing plus adonis gave me some hints to refine the mesh further and i am doing that now.

Yes, it has been done before:
But this was earlier on in my work. Have yet to revisit it..
But you can download it here..
http://outalance.battleclinic.com/atheorhaven/html/_sgg/m3m3s2_1.htm
But for the record, I also really like your original design, *plus* the second mesh. Please release both.. :D
-
Thanks for the link... loads of goodies to look at... ;)
I think i will finish the woods design then work on a tmp design simular to my design but more detailed.
Thanks for the input / advice and praise :)
-
I have finished the mesh now, it stands at a hefty 5200 Polys... but i stand by it. ;D
Thanks to adonis for the advice on the mesh improvments.. i have all the colours hexed out onto a palette, and am gonna go with simplified standard defiant panelling in a tos colour scheme as suggested by fallenwarrior.
Keep watching this space :)

Going to ask now.. when you release it, would you mind if I try a retexture? :) Have some ideas that I'd like to try with it that I'd been meaning to try with Hollis'...

If sized correctly, might make a nice Fed PF.

You have that Marge Simpson mesh by any chance? I remember it was floating around somewhere. Also, any Transformers models for SFC? Never knew if there were any.

have you try the battleclinic, i think i saw it there.

Definately, after the help you have provided so far, i will give you thw model in max format with the uvw mapping applied if you like so you can start with me.. should be mapped out 2nite..
I have spent 4 hours today, refining the mesh futher. it is now 100% squeeky clean, i noticed when i was mapping that their where some small overlaps and the like, when i went into detail on the model, after the boolean operations their where plenty of areas that needed fixing and cleaning up, so its horrible nitty gritty work but its now done and the mesh is sweet.. so i am now mapping it out :)

Does anyone have a link to a reference site for ship decals? I.e font types insignia types for perticular dates and stuff ?

Ok so 50% are gonna say.... "hey thats not a TOS colour scheme??!!"
Well the "U.S.S. CONSTITUTION NCC-1700" by Jason “Vektor” Lee
Was made to show the actuall colour and true potential of a Matt Jefferies design back in 1966.
probably one of the biggest models of all time.... so if his colour scheme is ok..... then im sticking with it...
AGREEABLY IT DOES LOOK LATE TOS EARLY TMP ;)
please feel free to comment and discuss, and even argue.. ;D
-
When it comes to fonts, best to do a google search for star trek fonts. There's a font pack out there with just about every single Star Trek themed font made. In fact, I'll attach it to this post for you.
As for insignias and such, most people take a little creative liberty sometimes when making a new class.

I like the preliminary textures. Looking sharp. My only thought is the blue color. Seems a little out of place for me, but that's just me of course. I can't quite explain it. Just doesn't feel TOS to me, but if what you're going for is a late TOS class, where the color scheme was being changed during the transition to TMP, then by all means, keep doing what you're doing.
Overall, keep posting updates to this baby.
-
thanks for the heads up.... im going to finish the mapping on the underside tonight before i get carried away with the textures, will have more updates 2nite tho :)
-
So, on the original defiant to two indents on the rear are shuttlebays apparently? so im gonna texture them accordingly, also the lip below bridge dome, is their enough room to odd one or two windows on a ship of this size realistically... I want this to be spot on and am in need of technical help on scaling etc ;)
thanks
-
I'd say slightly smaller than the TNG counterpart, about 95-100m's long. The TNG Defiant has two sets of small windows on each aft upper side of the deflector "head" and some circular ones on the bottom inset walls. I'd also suggest you take a look at the TOS Connie for clues about stenciling and stuff.
-
(http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/9163/wipng6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
ok thanks adonis.
-
The Definats shuttlebay is on the underside, so far the paint job looks great, my 2pence: your bussards should be a bit more washed out
kinda like what chiefbrex did with this
other than that its progressing nicely
Agreed on both points.. the bussard as it is looks like it's running pretty hot (but then again, this is roughly the yellow of the Star Trek: Legacy bussards)..
So there's precedence, but personally, I like them better redder. ;)
-
I'm not a fan of retconning designs. I'm really not. The whole idea rubs me up the wrong way.
That said, this ship is absolutely friggin' beautiful. She is expertly built, her components are in proper proportion to each other (managing to completely avoid the horrible blockiness of the 3d renders of larger and smaller SFB ships), and she just looks right.
Although I do agree that the bussard nacelle caps would look far better in that faded, white-dappled reddish pink that the latest TOS Constitutions are wearing.
While she will never be in my "official" Star Trek lineup even as a super-duper top-secret highly-advanced prototype, I still want her to take for a spin around the Klingon Empire :D
Hmmm... maybe I can incorporate it with a technobabble reason... like the Dauntless NX-01-A from VOY. A cunning plan by the Blackadderites to trick an isolated Fed crew...
Hmmm... ;D
Additional:
Since you're retconning the Defiant, what would you say to retconning all the late TNG/DS9/VOY ships into highly detailed TOS-style ships. Like a theme pack for SFC? Redo the Akira, Norway, Sabre, Steamrunner, Intrepid, and Sovereign classes the same way you've remodelled the Defiant here?
-
i like the color of the skin , sure its more tmp but its a late version of the defiant :)
what a tmp version of the defiant would look like?
i want that ship abd also what are the specs for it?
-

Actually, the windows you show appear to be scaled about right.. the best way to check is to remember that the shafts behind the bridge will be carrying people, and that should help for your scaling. :)
-
I don't want to piss on the parrade BUT there is NO TOS defiant. To create new designs on Gene's original vision is a farse, Defiant is a TNG desing PERIOD.Just like the Galaxy, and Sovereign etc. Just as Excelsior and Oberth and Miranda are TMP designs PERIOD. Maybe people that didn't grow up with the original series will buy it, but those who did won't. Don't build a design for the sake of building it. There WAS NEVER nor will there EVER be a TOS Defiant.
It NEVER existed. Show me ONE just ONE TOS design that comes anywhere close to a defiant design. ANSWER: YOU CAN'T. Trust me I am the king of Frankenstein bashes , BUT even I know the limits. Yes you have mad skills for meshing, BUT the design is a farse and will ALWAYS be a farse, and if my beliefs make me enemies so be it. SO again..THERE WAS AND WILL NEVER BE A TOS DEFIANT.
-now I expect my Karma rating to drop....so go for it >:(

I have washed out the buzzards and am applying more detail to the textures, the details in thereselves will be more faded and harder to see than they are currently.
Modelsplease, if it floats your boat to come into my thread and slam the design of the ship then i reckon your in the wrong place i did not design it, im just building it.
personnaly i feel the design is fun and its quirky, im doing a good job and am enjoying it, i want it to look right and i want people to like it.
Im not trying to change the face of trek here, im not saying it is right or wrong. What im saying is that these models are for fun.
everyone is entitled to their opinion. modelsplease, you feel free to express urself ;) Everyone else, thanks for your ideas and input im applying them as i go, and the time you guys take in ur replies is appreciated.
Its Now Sat afternoon, time for some slurpies, have a good weekend fellas ;)
-
LOL and as I figured my Karma dropped :D. Congrats to whoever did it, I hope it made ya feel like a man.
There was no disrespect intended toward you Geks, I've just been around this community for a long time and frankly I'm tired of people trying to turn TNG and TMP designs into TOS ones, and vice versa. A design (In my eyes) loses something when we ( as a community) belittle it and try to recreate it in an era in which it was NEVER designed to be in.
And to whoever decided to attack my Karma, keep it coming little boy, when you can match anyone here in the community with model releases, and conversions I may take it to heart, till then lmaooooooooooo, it means NOTHING. All it did was show your ignorance and immaturity :P
Peace

Geks Nice work on the model. it will make a nice Alternate Trek universe Mod ;D
-
Both the Excelsior and Miranda Classes are TMP/TNG designs. While they originated during the movie era, they were seen and used alot during the TNG era, both refitted versions and non-refitted versions.
While there never was a TOS Defiant Class seen in the series, does not proclude the ability of there ever being such a design. The main reason why all Fed ships during TOS were Constitution Classes, was because during the 60s it would have been too expensive to design and build different models for different ships. The "USS Defiant" of the TOS era could very well have been a different design then what was seen. I find it hard to believe that the entire Federation Starfleet's only ship design was the Constitution Class (which by gaming standards was a cruiser). There would always have to be ships of varying roles and specifications, such as scouts, destroyers, frigates etc.
"Just because you ain't seen it, doesn't make it not true."

Thanks guys, i restarted work this morning, should have her pretty much done 2day I think ;)

keep the good work :)
can't wait to download it and play with it :)

Lol thanks.. i'll get it up as soon as i possibly can so u can play to your hearts content ;D
-
The textures are looking really good! You are on a role, keep it coming!!!
-
Ignoring all of the apparently hot issues aside - I think that this model and it's textures are excellent work, I cannot wait to see what other expertly crafted models you produce, regardless of whether they fit everyone else's idea of the Trek Universe or not.
-
Thanks fellas... underside is underway, wont be able to do much 2nite cos im working. But i am sure i can do enough to justify a wip shot ;D
Thanks for your comments
-
did you fix the deflector on your model?
-
(http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/8571/wipgv6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
Final adjustment to the tint of the textures i think im finally happy with it!!!
Underside has started, i will show a wip of that when i get back from the pub later :drinkinsong:
did you fix the deflector on your model?
Not sure what u mean? You referring to its gray colour? if so i havent textured it yet and it will be bronze.. if not :-\ Help me out lol :D
-
She's looking credibly nice. Very smooth and detailed. Just sexy. :-D Yes, I find starships sexy.
Wonder what a Loknar (TMP) would look like if you meshed one.

the deflector dish was too large when you show it first, was wondering if you have fix it?
-
i forgot to ask you someting else, i got 3 models that need a break model and 2 of them need to fix part of the texture on the ship, i try it but can't do it :P
-
What are your plans as far as weapons? How are TOS weapons usually shown on a model?
-
that a good question
a tos ship well maybe disruptor and phaser 4, it need sothing that kick shields, also it need great power and shields.
well we just have to see what he will do ;D
-
Yeah the dish was fixed as this is a new model :)
Im going to texture the weapons on, im sure weapons on tos ships just look like spheres dont they, in the mirroe universe ent episode when archer blows up the tholian asteroid base with the defiant, the rear weapon came out of the sphere above the shuttle bay on the end of the aft hull.. so i will probably go with that i think.
-
Good :D

To my knowledge, which I'm not saying I'm an expert, TOS Fed weapons are behind panels. Gene didn't want to make the military part of the design to be prominent. The Defiant was a pure war design though. No point in concealing it's weapons. By TMP though the weapons were in full display anyhow.
The "sphere" where the rear firing weapons came from on Enterprise I think was the shuttle homing beacon, wasn't it? I didn't see it, but i read that.
Pulse phasers, are a function of 1st generation X-phasers in SFB (which SFC is based on). That function wasn't coded into SFC though. Instead they went with the overload function, which was dropped in SFB. Go figure. ::) I'd go with x-tech myself though. X-phasers, heavy photons, and if you'd like to have pulse phasers you can go with a couple of phaser Gs, possibly. Pretty nice model overall though. Good to have you here, man. More TOS please.
-
well eaw have no X-phaser, A-phaser, B-phaser or Heavy torpedo, only op have them,
well still you can make it a great model in eaw and op ;D
-
here something good ;D

I have an idea, one that really makes a lot of sence I think...
Anyway, here goes: Since we have a TOS Constitution class USS Defiant, and since I really think that Starfleet, or anyone for that matter (like the Klingon TOS D-7 that ends it's lineage with the K'T'Inga, Excelsior which ends it's lineage with the Lakota, etc.), we should find another name for this ship.
-
or Apophis ;D
that name would be great for it :D
-

There are, more or less, accepted standards for what weapon points look like. The Ent-A was a first generation X-ship. I was suggesting that he model his Defiant's weapons after the Ent-A with phaser balls and photona.

Yeah, Im not fussy about the name or the registry.. keep throwing ur ideas in and we can bash out the best one, not sure about the registry number in relation to the linage of the ship and stuff, i know allot about trek, im just not that way inclined ;)

Final model
Came it at just over 4k polys after refining, im now gonna try and work out the conversion thingy, and see how i go :)
-
Hey, I'll try to catch you msn so we can convert this baby to BC too, if you don't mind.
-
Thanks guys, your help and advice really helped in creating this model.
I'll keep an eye out for you on msn ;)
-
CONGRATULATIONS! on a fantastic job. 10/10 - two thumbs up!

Agreed. An amazing model.
-
Thanks guys, your comments are greatly appreciated, and if it wasnt for everyones input and comments along the way, then i might not have finished it. Im currently converting it to sfcIII as that is the only reference material I have found so far, should have it uploaded some time today :)
-
Ok, si i have converted it to a mod, made a break mod, got is hardpointed so the weapons are firing from the correct places, got it scaled correctly, made the ti,vl and BS images, got the .GF working, added in the dummy objects for the progressive damages, and made damage maps that include illums. Added in the glows using the modelling tools attribute editior thing. But when i export the model, it works fine but why is it smoothing my model.. i dont want it to, and when it asks if i want it to on the export i say no, but in game it smooths it all and it looks wrong when ur up close.
any ideas

Now, in Max, do the following:
Go to poly selection, and select polies by smoothing (in the section where you assign smoothing groups) and then detach each group to an element. SFCs *.mod format resembles the good'ol *.3ds format that we all hate the guts of in this matter. That'll fix the issue.
-
I can't wait to give this thing a whirl!!!
-
Hey thanks adonis, I had no idea that happened.. :)
I'll play around with it today and get it sorted :)
-
(http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/9346/oblivioningamegy1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
Thanks to Adonis it now looks much better ingame, it still seems to smooth areas that i dont want it too.. only ingame though, in the mod viewer and in max it appears exectly as it should, but it looks ok ingame.
I will provide a download link as soon as battleclinic letes me upload, both it and this thread arnt letting me upload, probably my crappy internet conexion >:(
Gives me time to release the bashable version though, should have it ready in 30 mins or so :)
-
I'll bet you it's the "dynamic LOD thingy" ::) that SFC3 uses. Especially if it looks good in the mod viewer.
-
Wow, it looks even better in-game then it did in the renders. . . a mark of a good ship :)
-
Thanks intestellar ;) Still trying to get it uploaded to no avail :(
Rod - I have no idea what that is LOL :D
-
http://www.battleclinic.com/docks/dock.php?id=4391
Ive managed to get the retexturable version up as its only 500k.. comes with uvw jpegs, .mod and .3ds model fully mapped for you to draw away ;)

Geks, I think I know what's causing the smoothing jibberish on the nacelles, you need to retriangulate the polies.
-
uploaded http://www.mediafire.com/?70zit3qjzmy ;D
retriangulate polies eh.. im on msn if ya fancy chatting about it on there... thanks allot man ;)
-
thanks for the mod
i will install it on my games today ;D
-
NP... enjoy man :)
-
Thanks intestellar ;) Still trying to get it uploaded to no avail :(
Rod - I have no idea what that is LOL :D
In earlier versions of SFC the models had 3 LODs (levels of detail). That's why the plugin asks whether it's a break model or not. Break models don't have LODs. If you look at a stock SFC2 model, and some custom models, in the mod viewer, under options->LOD you can view the different LODs. LOD 1 is the highest res, LOD 3 the lowest. As you get further away from a model you need less detail and it saves computer resources to switch to a lower res LOD.
SFC3 does this without the need for the models to be made with LODs. The game "dynamically" adjusts the poly count as you change distances from the model. I've seen complaints by modelers that the game causes smoothing problems when it does this.
-
Cool.. thanks for the explantion man ;)
-
i was wondering if your escort is the same size as the original?
-
Here is a pic of the scale, lol i should have posted it before ::)
(http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4453/oblivionsizecombl5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
-
ahh the kid brother of the defiant :)
cool, thanks ;D
-
Lol... yep... i mainly scaled it smaller because of the bridge dome and turboshafts, that and the port holes on the underside were scaled to show a smaller version than the tng escort class.
-
i found on my HD something for your defiant, "the pulse phaser" ;)
you could had it with your model.
-
does your mod have Hard Point?
-

What's not specifically stated here, is that's what you do to get a model ready for SFC3.
-
its hard ponted but what number is where on it?

First off, Geks isnt even here he is back on assignment
secondly would you rather him make models and get them game worthy or write up a long ass tut on SFC3ing, even though SFC3 files thanx to Greenlav has several tuts of making a ship SFC3 ready in less that half hour
thirdly HPing is basicing placing joints into the model using milkshape you name these as your HP and damage points 1-15 for phaser and 16-24 (25 is possible but its a kind of a phantom) although they can be played about with so a phaser bank holding a torp (no refittable)
then its a case of using taldrens model tool for the added glows and d'deridex hardpoint assigner
First off, don't go all Klingon on me.
Secondly, I was simply stating that because I know that Don uses EAW and that the model is done for SFC3.
Thirdly, I know perfectly well how to HP a model.

Hardpoint 25 for SFC3 doesn't work at all. I'm the one that first discovered that problem. You'll see it fine in the refit screen, but when you're in mission, not only doesn't it show, it doesn't work. It's one of the code bugs that never got a chance to be fixed.

P.S.
In SFC3, it doesn't really matter what hardpoints you use for primary weapons and secondary weapons. I've toyed with settings to have the last 10 as phasers and first 10 for torpedoes, and this was when I was bored.
As long as you properly set the arc for a particular hardpoint, and designate whether a hardpoint is primary or secondary in the defaultcore and defaultloadout files, the game really doesn't care.
Makes for some interesting ships.

... fired this ship up in the Glow Editor today and tweaked the glows a bit. 14 different glows now instead of 1. ;)
Think of it as an alternate glow to try out.. back up the original one first though..
