Title: More Airships. . .
Post by: intermech on June 23, 2007, 07:49:30 am
I was browsing the internet, found and Aeronef website and was inspired. Here is my first attempt at a "nef."

Neat concept. I'd still like to see you or another modeller try one of the steampunk starships you posted in the Unique Ships thread.

Nice work!

Thanks for the support FW, I know it is out there, but it is fun.

Red_Sharif, I have started on one of those but have not gotten very far. What I am showing below is try number 3:

Here are some screenies of the nefs in game. I have changed all of the textures to that sapia tone to get the feel of the era while playing. However, I have included one color shot for those interested.

Go for it! I think there is a lot of room for creativity. I can't wait to see what you come up with! Of course, I have added my own twist on them, but here is a site (and some pics) that I used for some inspiration:

You got me playing around with one today.. I'll see how it turns out.  :D

Mesh from scratch, textures from scratch, so I imagine that it'll look like crap next to some of the others..

(edit: well, at least I got it *sort* of mapped right.. :D  Not done texturing it yet.. but here's where it sits tonight)

Thansk IM.. what a fun concept!  :)

I keep forgetting that I still have this...

with some modifications it'd make an ok aeronef :D

That thing's awesome.

You know, I have a fleet of blimps/zeppelins on here somewhere. I don't know what an Aeronef is, but it screams Ether/Steampunk.

Yes yes ive wasted a couple of polies (well more than that) on the details but ill cut them down once im done (if i get done) with textures :p

and on yeah interstellarmachinedude, could you possibly send a bunch of your ship textures (nefstylee) my way as im completely useless trying to create any of my own right now :P

Man, that stuff all looks good! Atheorhaven, I really like the wings on your design, ribbed structures are difficult to do. Mackie, I like both your willyfin and your new WIP, they both look great.

Polygon-wise, there are a lot of cylinders on one of these things, that eats up your polies pretty quick. I am disappointed that to be able to adequately play mine in game, I am having to use alot of 5-sided "cylinders." Any suggestions or tricks out there to save on polygons and not sacrifice the look?

Thanks dude :> I am a little disappointed in my skills to make make the ships look 'old', though :/ hoping that your textures will help, thanks for them too :>
as for cylinders, i dont think theres any golden road for saving polies and having quality at the same time im afraid.... I personally just have a habit of first normally making the ship regardless of polies and once i've applied teh textures I cut polies with what tools lightwave 8.5 has :>

alright heres another one, im just about done texturing the first one but since i cant unwrap for sh*t im having to set uvs for every single goddamn detail so it gets bit tedious after a while...

Post by: atheorhaven on July 11, 2007, 02:33:08 pm
Heheh.. I actually cheated on those IM.. they're textured in.  For the wings, I started off with a rectangle that had a number of chunks in it, and then rotated and twisted a couple of times.. then mirrored the one wing to get the other side.  Nicest part of the mesh is the rear structure, but it's all still pretty amature.  I know that I'm not the best mesher out there, but doing this was more to have fun anyways.. :D

Did a bit more work on the upper deck today, and will be adding a cargo/shuttle bay as well..

Hey Mackie - things are lookin' good so far, but because of Lightwaves GI its hard to see the shape of the hull (as opposed to the details, which one can see perfectly) can you throw a groundplane into your scenes?

er its not because of lightwave but rather because im a slacker cutting down on rendering time (only rendering the details and rest so and so) xD

It looks like any of the City Class river iron clads. Otherwise I would say CSS Virginia (Merimack). Is that right?

With Mackie and Atheorhaven doing these hi-quality models, I was inspired to start revamping my nefs. I added about 700 polygons and made a separate texture for it:

_sweet_ :D
tbh theyre only seemingly high quality since im yet to optimize them, as said i first sorta flesh out the models and then reduce polies :>
the second nef is only something like 2000 polies as it stands even right now, but that amount will go down too :p

Here is a smoke effect I will be trying in game. Milkshape shows it pretty well, but the real test will be SFC3 engine.

its pretty awesome in a picture but I cant imagine it looking too good when its moving along statically with the model :P

Yes FW, I used tga's for the smoke, handrails, and propellers.

Mackie, I am saddened about the shelving of the first design, please don't trash the mesh, I am sure it could be used somewhere. I can't wait to see your new designs.

Bump for updates on Mackie and Atheorhaven's ships!

Texturing complete, tested in SFC 1 demo (my usual test bed), just need to scale it down to not be a monsterous size.  :D

Once that's done, light maps next and SFC 3 treatments.. though might adjust one of the textures slightly..

Alright I feel a bit humbled right now... I just cant get my self to finish this damn thing so i figured i should release what i have this far if anyone would like to have a shot at it (wink wink interstellar) so that it wouldnt be a complete and utter waste  :P

http://www.the-tcs.net/misc/macksneff.zip

Within the file, there are the textures and the model in .lwo, .cob, .x and .obj formats...
I tried 3ds but I couldnt get the model to convert right, deepexplo (the program i use for file conversions) butchered it every time because it seemed like it wanted to triple the model. TWICE ;D

I'll give it a shot when I get home Mackie..

Mine isn't completed yet (along with some other SFC projects) because I'd started another, different, sort of project.. this was inspired by this and the steampunk mods I was looking at.  Had it drop into my hands, had the stuff, hence the project..

(details at:  http://atheorhaven.myblogtwo.com/ )

Don't want to steal the thread.. just want people to know why I've not released the stuff still on my plate.. :)

Finally got the aeronef scaled.. and it's play tested at the new size in SFC 1.  Here's a screenshot..

(ps: wanted to get this out in some form before Christmas).

Have to warn you, my meshing on this one is pretty hideous.. :p

Just have to upload it somewhere (will probably be Battleclinic).

And here's the SFC 1 link:

(update: And the SFC 2 link:

(third update:  And a SFC 3 link:
