Hi everyone,
As you know I have not been involved in SFC for a while. I essentially stopped playing once I started fixing bugs in the codebase, and then once Tandren went under, I pretty much moved on to other games. Now I have two kids (6 1/2, and 3 years old), a successful eBay business (http://www.magnaroute.com/), so my time for games is basically nonexistant. The only think I've played recently in fact is Star Trek: Legacy which was "ok", not too deep, ok graphics though. Nothing to advance things to the next level of Star Trek gameplay, unfortunately.
I found that I have the final EAW Client source code sitting on a hard drive... I know this isn't of much use to anyone any more, but I thought I'd let it be known. It is a zip file of my Visual SourceSafe project. This also has inside it my development notes which are always interesting reading. I can post these if people are interested, or maybe make it an added incentive for the following...
I also found buried in a box in the basement some artifacts of SFC lore which might be interesting to folks. I have:
* Sealed SFC2:EAW, Signed by Taldren Developers
* Sealed SFC2:OP, Signed by Taldren Developers
* (2) Sealed SFC3, Signed by Taldren Developers
* The original dollar bill which was payment for my work on SFC2:EAW, signed by Erik Bethke
* A author signed copy of Game Development and Production (Erik Bethke)
* A size XL red SFC2:EAW tee-shirt, not signed...

The one thing I havent' found yet is a full-size pirate flag that Capt. Newt sent to me years ago. I was going to take a picture of it under a local street in the town I live (Orion Way). Never did it, and now I don't know if I have the flag any more :<
I was wondering if people would be interested in bidding on these either as a single package or individually through eBay. The proceeds of the sales would be going to a worthy cause, which would be disclosed after the auctions end. Post your opinions here. Thanks, and watch your back - pirates are everywhere! iCoP forever!

Wow mags!!!!!
Hell yes!

Why long time no see, Mags :)
You know, D.Net and the DGA would love to maintain a copy of the source and your notes here, on the website.
I've sent you a PM about it ... :)

Wow mags! The source would actually be incredibly useful in understanding how/why certain things work the way they do (just as knowledge of how the serverkit works has helped us work around some grotty problems in server administration).
And, if nothing else, it would be tremendously interesting to those of us who have hacked away at the series for the past ... geez ... is it eight or nine years now?
thanks!

Only problem is I don't have the OP client sources. I'd be more than happy to give the EAW sources... I think they correspond to 2.0.0.7...
It would be nice if we could get Dave to release the OP sources to the general public (client and server) to keep development going.
It would be really nice to have a moderated CVS or MSVSS public source code control where changes could be approved.
I'm not actually sure if I *can* release the sources legally as they contain some licensed bits... but they were licensed ot Taldren so I have no clue on the legality of any issues there... my guess is the contract carries over licensing in perpetuity but I would have to find it.
-
Could the source be used with another game engine to add *stuff to?
*Andros, Tholians, Seltorians... :)
-
It is the complete EAW source code so it includes the client and the server.
So it wouldn't have the speculative lighting enhancements that they introduced in OP (right?? it's been a LONG time), but if you have Visual C++ 6.0 you can basically build a client and server. My only fear would be people would start looking for ways to hack the networking.
-
Yeah, hacking the server would probably be a problem. I know that there used to be, and very well might still be, people who would like to cause problems for DV.net and/or Battleclinic.
Just my oppinion, but I think that since DV.net maintains the server that it'd be the best place for the source, if it were to be released to anyone. If a jerk(s) got ahold of it and could mess with the server that could ruin what we already have instead of improving anything.
AFAIK there were no graphics additions to OP. The Specularity is an SFC3 addition.

Hacking could be a problem, but it would also open up many avenues for the comunity to support and continue the game. Getting a peep behind the scenes would help with all the questions there are on what things are. (my quick question to be answered would be is the type VI drone for fighters the larger drone as the ship mod program says, or the anti-fighter drone from SFB also called a Type VI)
I for one would love to see the source for the game, if for no other reason then to have a version that is closer to SFB to play at home.
-
If a backup copy were to accidentally fall into the hands of certain community members, well, sh*t happens. I would still keep the fact under wraps, however just it may be.
That version of the Dynaverse might be twitchy but I could be wrong. I don't remember which changes made it to which version. Portions might not compile under VC2005 or even the second version of 2003 but it might be possible to convert it and fix it up. It would be awesome to update the renderer and carve the fat out of the network code and do something to expand the mod potential... oh my.

Heh, some of us keep a machine with older VCs on it expressly for the purpose of SFC stuff
(hell, gotta do something with retired PCs ;D )

Which is why it needs to be released, if at all, to a establishment that's already proven it's responsible, trustworthy and has the community in mind.
D.Net.
:)
Oh, and BTW, Dave doesn't have any OP source for the client side. ToastyO drove him to the point of deleting it due to his constant requests for it to be released.
I believe his exact words were "I am tired of someone trying to get me to give away someone elses property."

I'd be interested in bidding, BTW.

My original plan was to surprise Frey and auction off the items and donate all the proceeds to Frey for running Dynaverse.net and paying for it out of pocket for all this time. But it sounds like he would rather have the items to keep with the rest of the Starfleet Command legends and lore collection for Dynaverse.net.
So I have decided to ship the items to Frey directly, they will not be going up for auction.
Hey, there *is* a real dollar bill in there. So I am officially a donator now.

WOOT!

Wow!!!! You really are awesome Mags. I know you/Khoromag did tons of work for no compensation on these games. You've always been a huge contributer, in my book.
-
Magnum, this was quite a surprise.
I got a whole slew of PM's from Admins / Mods in regards to this ;)
Community, Hats off to MagnumMan for his contribution to the community ONCE AGAIN.
The signed copies will go into storage, to be truly a part of the Historical Lore of this legacy SFC has brought about...
The EAW source code ( both client / server) will be listed as assets under the Dynaverse Gaming Association. This is done to protect the content, as well as enable us to better serve the SFC community in revision and release control.
WOW !!!! MAGNUMMAN !!!
Best regards,
Frey

OMG!..almost forgot...hey MAGS!....any notes on those fixes you once came up with?
aka....the plasma bolt...
and a functional ADD/G-rack fix?
:)
-
Long Range Sensors didnt see this coming... :-\
Mags...U ROX !
Nuff Said...
If the end result of the "archeological" discovery allows some improvement to OP...great, if not...Oh well, no reason to de-cloak.
But we all know Mags is the da MAN...did so much for so long...deserves some manner of enshrinement by our niche community here.

Ah yes, well, it's been a heck of a long time so I don't remember all the details... I do remember implementing both a plasma bolt and offensive Plasma-D (lots of little blue balls!). I think they both got turned down. The Hellbore "shot" for lack of a better term made for a perfect bolt. Frey has my coding notes now from the EAW project and he is welcome to post them verbatim in the forum for enshrinement.
