Title: Man Shoots Girlfriend’s Computer After Installing Windows Vista

Quote
After installing Windows Vista on the girlfriend’s 2 year old computer Jackson was trying to get some of her older programs to work with the new operating system. “He couldn’t get anything to work like it was supposed to”, said girlfriend Wanda White. “He just kept screaming at it and smacking the side of the computer”.

White had heard enough cursing from her boyfriend and went next door to her friend’s apartment. After about 20 minutes White and her friend heard gun shots from the apartment where Jackson was working. “We both ran over there to see what was happening”, said White. When she opened the door there sat Jackson with his pistol in his hand. He had just shot the computer 5 times and missed once. The miss had gone into the neighbors apartment and the bullet was lodged into their refrigerator.

Is this a true story?  I don't have a clue.  Just thought it funny.

If the judge has experience of Microsoft Windows in any of its incarnations, then the cop should have his sympathy.

How on earth can anyone miss a computer at point blank range?? and a cop too!!

Never had any trouble (fingers crossed) since the Norton 360 had a virus delete 5 key files when my son used Firefox to browse the internet instead of Vista Explorer and thus bypas all the Firewall and Security defences. He won't do that again!! I dleteted Firefox from the computer!!

Waitaminute...  So you're saying all of Vista's vaunted security features *only* work when you're using Microsoft's web browser?

Right.  I'm glad I'm off Winblow$ for good.   :(

It seemed that way as the Firefox didn't activate Norton 360 either. There was no security bars for either defence systems when I activated Firefox, so I turned it off again.

And my son was promoting Firefox as being, "Ever so much faster than Explorer, etc."  Not surprising, really, as the security checks were being skipped.

He also wonders why he doesn't have administrator priveledges on the home system.

I need to know what is and what isn't installed on this laptop as it connects to the rest of the world. He is a "Click YES and read later" type user. You know kids.

Interestingly enough, Firefox is ALSO more secure than IE...even when you have IE with security settings. From what I gather.

So even with security checks, IE is the least secure browser out there.

Ironically I do use IE for web browsing like I am doing here currently, however, your son seems to have some idea on the internet it seems.

Some of the rubbish he comes out with that he's learnt in IT class at school is frightening. His idea of how servers and internet connections are made as taught at school compared to actual reality was one cause for concern.

He'll tell me that his teacher says that something isn't impossible and that he's asked his teacher who's said I'm wrong, so I say, "come here"  and <Click>, <Click>, <Tyoe>, <Type>, <Click>, <Click> later, and behold, the impossible has just been performed!!

That's why I keep telling him that is why I'm an electronics engineer and not an IT teacher. I know a hell of a lot more about computers. I fail to find them exciting after so many decades of exposure.

When I was a mature student at university, back in 1996, old Mac Plusses were being used as doorstops to the labs and computer suites on the engineering floor.

There were two nteworks at the time in play, the PC one and the Mac one. The PC one was the one that was always offline being fixed or crashed. I signed up for the Mac one from day one and it ran faultlessly for the 3 years I was there. A hell of a lit of students defected and discovered Macintoshes in the forst 6 months of the year.

Needless to say, I hacked the system and stored all backed up work on every machine and server in the engineering house using an encrypted archiver and then making the resultant file a hidden *.DLL stashed inside a ligitimate programme. No system has any defence from having software and licences cloned by an archiver package and someone who knows how to use one. Hence why they're banned from use inside any government facility, especially millitary. I demonstated the powers ARJ to a security manager at an MOD place once and he was horrified how it sought out and cloned a list of files within 10 seconds from the network without ringing any bells or whistles.

Anyone else ever hacked systems using archivers, etc., just for research experimentation purposes, of course??

I, for one, don't find this funny. This is the sort of asshole that hits people when he gets angry. Clearly, he wasn't thinking straight -- what if that stray bullet lodged in some kids head?

Look, we all get frustrated now and then. Hell, I'm frustrated by complex computer problems at work ALL the time. But I don't go over to the nearest marine MP, borrow his side arm, and blow a hole in the equipment no matter how much satisfaction that would give me.

EH, looks like another case of code rage =P I see it at work all the time.

I does sound like another case of an adult having a childish tantrum.

I stopped watching American Chopper because I couldn't stand seeing a 50 something toddler throwing a wobbly every 5 minutes or so.

Perhaps the guy just misunderstood the phrase "Troubleshooting" in the "Idiot's guide to PCs"!!
