I'm still learning how to be a 'real' modeller, as opposed to a kitbasher. I doubt I'll ever do more than bash someone else's work and add in my own little touches. What follows is my first attempt at doing just that: adding my own mesh to an existing model.
I wanted to create a weapons pod along the lines of the one Tachy uses in his TOS Miranda model. It took a few tries, but I came up with something I liked. Next, I had to figure out how to add a texture. I'll mention here that there are some good video tutorials up on YouTube that deal with Milkshape. PM me if you want a link to them. While using one of LS's existing textures, I came up with a configuration (quite by accident) that I like. Please take a look at the following screenshots and let me know what you think. Any comments, criticisms, suggestions are welcome.

maybe use the same type of launcher that is just ahead of the bridge rather than slots like a tmp launcher? And use 4 instead of 2?
Perhaps more pronounced gridlines? Otherwise it seems to fit.

For a kitbash that's a great job!

Very unusual design there, I love it! TOS was always my first fixation. 8)
