I just installed SFC 1 on XP and it seems to be running all right in 95 compatibility mode... except for Sulu's voiceovers during the tutorials. Is this a known error, or am I just going to have to miss out? Any ideas?

Try turning off Win95 compatibility mode. It runs fine on XP for me without any compatibility modes enabled. Though it has the no keyboard issue because of the movie, this is easy enough to fix by just minimizing and restoring or better make a shortcut directly to Starfleet.exe instead of the default sfc.exe which plays the movie.
Other question is what version are you running? You should patch it to 1.03:
ftp://www.dynaverse.net/sfc1/patches/
ftp://www.dynaverse.net/sfc1/patches/SFC_1.00_to_1.03_Patch.exe <-- use this one if you have just installed from CD V1.00
And finally the trick question: Is \Assets\sound\SFCSounds.zip present in your install? And if so what size is it?
(Basically, if the file is not there, or the wrong size, you have a warez copy and we cannot support that.)
-
No, I don't have a warez copy- I have the legitimate install disc. I haven't played it since I bought it way back when and I've never tried to play it on xp before. The SFCSounds.zip is 46,594kb. And on the other, you're right, my mistake. I'm not running it in compatibility mode. I had been having problems getting it to run in the first place, it kept just closing the starfleet.exe window after flashing black for a minute, so I tried a number of different things. I think that particular problem was related to the limited graphic configuration available. It doesn't like my ATI card. All the other sound effects and music work, the text scrolls, but Sulu never speaks.
Edit: I have upgraded to 1.03.

Setting your video colour depth to 16 bit will help with some issues, but not with sound.
What soundcard do you have? Have you tried updated drivers? Weird that all the sounds work but the zipped ones.
-
It's onboard audio built into my P5W DH Deluxe motherboard. Is there any way that I could unzip the files to use them? What exactly are the Sulu audio files named? Is it possible that I need to install a driver or codec? Or is this a directx issue? It is weird.
All my ATI drivers are up to date (as far as I'm aware).

OK..
For XP and SFC 1
Turn off Anti-Virus
Install SFC 1, say no to MPlayer, say no to DirectX, allow game to istall to the Default directory from the game CD .. Registry Key points to default game folder after patch install, so game needs to be in default directory from CD
Launch game and on the slpash screen look at the bottom right corner and see what version it is 1.00, 1.01, or 1.021
Get the appropriate patch I created below
A) If your game version is 1.00.01, get the following patch file.
Patch 1.00 to 1.03 (http://nightsoftstudios.com/effhq/files/SFC_1.00_to_1.03_Patch.exe)
B) If your game version is 1.01.00, get the following patch file.
SFC Patch 1.01 to 1.03 (http://nightsoftstudios.com/effhq/files/SFC_1.01_to_1.03_Patch.exe)
C) If your game version is 1.02.01, get the following patch file.
SFC Patch 1.021 to 1.03 (http://nightsoftstudios.com/effhq/files/SFC_1.021_to_1.03_Patch.exe)
go into the SFC 1 game folder, find the Starfleet.exe game file, right click select copy
go to desktop and in empty area, right click and select Paste Shortcut.
Right click the shortcut and select properties
click on compatibility tab and put a check into "Disable Desktop Composition" and click OK
re-enable your Anti-Virus
Launch game
Make sure your DirectX is up to date using the March 7, 2008 redistributable download (69.5 Mb)
Make sure your graphic drivers are the latest WHQL approved from the card manufacturer
Finally make sure you have the latest sound card drivers from the machine manufacturer or from the sound card manufacturer
Launch game and play..
If wanting to play on Gamespy Arcade, Install Gamespy Arcade, log in, to to File and select options, click on Games and fhange Starfleet Command executable to Starfleet.exe
Then on your desktop shortcut for Starfleet Command, right click and select properties, click compatibility tab and choose Runin compatibility mode for and select Win 98.me, click OK.
Remember to remove this for Single Player game play.
SFC 1 will not run under Windows 95 compatibility.. the game was designed for Win 98SE and ME editions.. XP will play it just fine, but with a little lag on the first mission when a shuttle or fighter is launched and the first fire of weapons.. after that it will play smooth for hours and hours without the slightest bit of lag.
Hope this helps.

I think the problem was an improper patch. I had upgraded from 1.00 to 1.03 when I should have realized that my original version was actually 1.01. Sulu works now. Thanks guys!

Glad you got it sorted. Pestalence knows his SFC really well, he has a way of helping one step through all the issues systematically, I know, having recently benefited from his help myself!
George Takei (http://www.georgetakei.com/) did a great job on that. It really adds to the experience. Seems to me he may have even posted here once or twice? Plus, if we show our appreciation we just might be able to rope him in for future projects? ;)
