OK.. lets do the basics of trouble shooting.

1. What Operating System are you running? Vista? XP?
2. What is the game version? (found on lower right splash screen corner when game launches)
3. Don't launch from the SFC.exe game file.. change the shortcut to point to the Starfleet.exe game file to launch game. (SFC.exe has been broken since day one)
4. Are you running the latest DirectX version. (November 2008)

If you are running Vista.. it takes special install instructions. Please post back so I can write up the instructions.

If you are running XP.. follow the install instructions located at :

Hope that this helps.

Follow the link above for XP, it gives full install instructions for playing SFC 1.

If you still have problems after that, then post back.

Make sure you follow the instructions completely.. only 1 edit.. turn off Anti-Virus active scanners before installing the game, and only turn it back on once patching is complete.

If you have further problems, then we need to look at your hardware and a DXDIAG report.

Hope this helps.

Capt_Pestalence the problem tomjayrodnoble is having is that when he puts the CD in the drive and autoplay runs "sfc setup.exe" on the CD he gets the error

[The procedure entry point SUnMapls_IP_EBP_20 could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll]

I get the same error.

Now I don't know what the problem is but the way I got around it was to browse to the CD istelf and rather than run "sfc setup.exe",  which again gives the error, I ran "Setup.exe".

I don't know how this effects the install but it does install. Any idea what effect it might have?

During the introduction of XP Service Pack 2, one of MS hotfixes broke CD recognition of the game CD on some PC's. Usually Universal Plug and Play caused this to happen, so disabling that service in Services.msc usually clears this up.

If not, then it is a combination of software, hardware, anti-virus and MS hotfixes (same problem still present in XP SP 3) and installing manually by exploring the game CD and changing the properties of Setup.exe to Disable Visual Themes and/or setting to Win 98 compatibility mode and launching this file directly afterwards will allow the game to install.

Other times, just unplugging USB peripherals will do the trick.

but you also still need to follow the patching instructions from the XP link above.
